I call this disc odd both in the music and the sonic quality of the disc. The music on the more "advant garde" Lyndsey Buckingham cuts, adv res 5.1, does not seem to be mastered well (the DD 5.1 mix is no better) and I wonder if this disc may have been rushed to meet the CD release date. I want to listen to these cuts more before I make a final judgement. On the more "accessible" mainstream cuts the mastering and surround mix is excellent. The surround is mixed unagressively and I had to turn and look at my surround speakers to make sure something was coming out (it was). There is one song though, I forgot to notate the song, that has what sounds like a bongo coming out of the right surround that does not blend in. Also on "Come", the disc has a defect in the middle on the adv res 5.1 track on my copy (not on the DD 5.1).While it seems like I have a lot of complaints, I still like this disc. There are a lot of songs that are mixed and recorded well that I like (the disc has 18 songs in all). I'd give it around 3 1/2 to 4 stars out of five.
Follow Ups:
Not on my copy. 5.1 and 2 channel play with no problems. Agree that this is a strange brew of music. Wonder if the lack of continuity is a direct reflection of Christine McVie's absence.
.
Given the length of the disc, it is possible that there's a layer change in the middle of the track.I don't have my copy of the disc yet, so I can't comment on the specifics.
"""Given the length of the disc, it is possible that there's a layer change in the middle of the track."""
This would be no different than a SACD with comparable content length. If you exceed 4.5 or so GB, you will have a layer change, regardless of media.
According to HFR its a DVD-9. But even with a layer change, no disc author is going to put the break in the middle of a track. A dual-layer disc could easily store this length of material, and the break be between songs.
Actually your wrong the Police live SACD is over 130 mins on one disc, no layer issues either.
If my calculations are correct, 130 minutes of stereo only material could fit within the constraints of a DVD-5 if they use DST compression for the data.Let's see:
7800 seconds @ 5.6 Mbits/second is a little less than 6GB of data. If the compression ratio of DST exceeds 25%, you could fit this into a single layer.
I agree that it should be that way, but there's no accounting for the decisions made by the person (or people) that author a particular disc.
As I said, I don't have the disc at this point, and my computer with the DVD-ROM drive is 300 miles away, so I can't look at it.
It gets an HFR 'Blue Duck' in one category! Never seen that before! :-)
