Is the audio quality of the Denon DVD-1600 better than that of the Panasonic RP82? I know these players use the same basic design, for video at least, was wondering if the audio sections differ at all. I'm trying to find a player that does a decent job with Video as well as DVD-A. Maybe I should wait and see what the DVD-2900 is like, but I'm thinking it's video chipset will be worse than that on the 1600.
Follow Ups:
I just bought the Denon DVD-1600. The DVD Video is great but plain old CDs are terrible. Way too bright. Highs on Miles Davis' "So What" from "Kind of Blue" are screechy to the point of being painful. Same with Brubeck's "Take Five". For regular CDs this thing is unlistenable. I am goign to keep it just for DVD play but I am looking elsewhere for something to play CDs and SACDs. I'd like to find something that just does CDs and SACD really well so I am paying for audio instead of a universal player where I am paying for DVD-V. I could be wrong but I don't see DVD-A having a future.
the video section is based on the panny rp56 rather than the rp82, but it uses the same mpeg decoder as the rp82i haven't heard the audio but put it this way - it can't be any worse than the rp82
i own the rp82 and the audio for dvd-a is quite decent, much better than the pioneer 47a/747/733 etc. - only shortcoming is lack of low level detail
if you are interested in sacd though, you might want to wait for the 2900
You will get a much better mpeg chip and video dac's and better audio dac's with the DVD2900.
I guess I'll wait, but there is some sort of Y/C delay problem that exists with the 3800, that I think will also be present on the 2900, there's a big discussion ongoing at avsforum regarding the 2900. The 1600 seems to have almost flawless video performance according to the dvd-shootout page, and from most users. Does the 2900 use a new or improved video section compared to the 3800, or the same one?
the Denon USA webpage a new mpeg decoder is used. The Y/C problem is most likely a software issue with the silicon image progressive chip.
These higher end Denon's are all firmware upgradeable through cdrom.
They did solve some issues with the current series with upgrades.
But alas nothing is perfect.
The issues unearthed by Secrets are countered by the fact that the 3800 and A1 have much better video section overall.
The new DVDO iScan ultra stand alone converter which uses the same Silicon image deinterlacer chip is having an option to adjust the Y/C delay. But to be sure wait a bit longer for the reviews.
There is also time alignment for DVD Audio and better BM than the 1600 has.
Well getting a decent all in one would be nice, I think I'll wait and see what the 2900 has to offer. I can get the 1600 for about $380 online though, I could use the 1600 for DVD-A and playing movies, and my Sony DVP-NS755V for SACD's. Right now I use the Sony for movies and SACD's and an old JVC I got from ebay for DVD-A. In 2-3 years it will be all about HD-DVD anyways I hope.
