Thanks I'll try that (looks like about 4 points to desolder). Then also maybe a small brass screw on the top of the spindle motor.Looks like I don't have to remove the flat black disk (that spins the dvd)? I was concerned primarily with how to remove that as it appears to on pretty tight.
I'm still waiting for my part to arrive so I'm hoping that this is worth the effort.
No, you don't have to remove the "flat black disc." The top of the drive slides off once you've unlocked two levers.Then the entire motor assembly comes off provided you remove the restraining bolts. after that, you disassemble the motor assembly, unsolder the motor from the circuit board, replace the new motor, and then put everything back together again.
It is a bit fiddly, but hopefully you'll figure it out. And if not, buy a new drive!
