Hi there,I've had my $175 Pioneer DV-563A for over a year now and it's played all surround formats beautifully (to my ears). It's had no problems with DVD-Audio (Fleetwood Mac-Rumors, Yes-Fragile), SACD (Dark Side of the Moon, Steely Dan-Gaucho, Sam Cooke at the Copa) or DTS surround (Toy Matinee, Wings-Band on the Run).
But I just got the new Jackson Browne "Running On Empty" DVD-Audio and I'm getting NO sound whatsoever! I can navigate through the disc menus and play the tracks, but I get no sound no matter what settings I choose on my amp (5.1/stereo/etc.). I popped in a couple of other DVD-A and SACD discs to make sure they still play and they do.
So is it possible that one disc can be incompatible with certain players? I hope you'll forgive the newbie question, I just have never experienced a problem like this before -- and "Running On Empty" is one of my all-time favorite albums!!! I'm bummed. (Not to mention 25 bucks down the drain.)
Follow Ups:
One question which may be way too obvious. Is your system hooked up via the 6 "external in" audio jacks or are you using only a coax or optical digital connection? I thought if you were on the digital connection and selected the dvd-audio program from the menu you might not then get any audio. Just a thought.
> > I thought if you were on the digital connection and selected the dvd-audio program from the menu you might not then get any audio < <More often than not -- with copy-protected DVD-As in a DVD-A player -- that's what happens. But in a DVD-Video player, the DVD-A would pass the Dolby-Digital automatically through a digital connection.
With some classical audiophile DVD-As (and all 2-ch DADs), which are not copy protected, it will pass the front L/R channels digitally into my pre-pro at 96kHz/24bit.
Thanks for the help, friends, and yes I do have it connected correctly. User 'Bobo U2' has pointed out to me that my Pioneer 563A has a known compatibility issue and requires a free firmware upgrade from Pioneer. I've done research on the net about it and found a lot of info about it. Now I just need to drive an hour to the nearest Pioneer service center and they'll fix it and mail it back to me after a few weeks!!! Ugh. Thanks for your help. -Greg
one word....Upgrade
three words.... Loan Me $1000.So what I guess you're trying to say is that some DVDA's are not compatible with some DVDA players? Seems like that's the case, and that kinda stinks.
I tried the disc in another (regular) DVD player, and lo and behold the menu options changed. Instead of only the DVDA options (as appeared in my Pioneer machine), it only gave me DTS and Dolby Digital options. I just wish the disc was designed to give ALL of the options from my Pioneer DVD/DVDA player. Ah well, at least I can play the disc now in Dolby Digital 5.1. Better than nothing.
No you need the upgrade from Pioneer not a new player. Read that thread from QQ I posted. It can be a painless procedure...depending where you live.
Oh cool! I didn't realize a firmware upgrade was even a possibility. Just found the old posts about it, thanks a lot! I live in L.A. so it shouldn't be a problem. Sorry I misunderstood you the first time. Thanks for your help!!! So glad I posted the question to this board.

No problem....I'm glad you didn't go and buy a new player.
