Telarc used to use 3 microphones in their older Stereo recordings. But now their Surround Sound Classical recordings use 7 microphones, however only 4 of them are used for the high resolution 2 channel mix. However many of their Jazz and Blues recordings are multi-mic'ed!On DVD-Audio the Vox and Vanguard analog recordings released by Classic Records and Silverline use only 4 microphones.
Follow Ups:
Unfortunately Sheffield Lab, Naim, etc don't do DVD-A or SA-CD. Vox & Vanguard do not exist anymore (so no new recordings)! Looks like there are no DVD-A companies that are doing new minimal miking recordings!Do you know if Tacet & MDG are multi miked. They were DVD-A labels who seem to be moving to SACD!?!
Also do you know if Reference Recordings does multi miking? They are back! Hope they release DVD-A of their recordings.
depending on the hall used, type of music, etc. He has used as little as 2 microphones and as many as a dozen.Reference Recordings are generally excellent. If you have an HDCD decoder then I would recommend getting the HDCDs. If you can find them the LPs are even better. Reference Recordings will NOT be doing DVD-Audio or SACD but may do a few Blu-Ray.
MDG and Tacet make excellent DVD-Audio's and SACDs. Tacet also releases LPs and many use tubed equipment. Don't know how many microphones they use but the results are excellent.
