Racerguy, I believe you own the Ayre C-5xe. We've tried to make it so you can navigate DVD-A discs without the need for a video display, but it seems like there are some authoring houses determined to achieve the exact opposite. So far we are winning the battle, but you never know what arcane authoring practices are lurking out there....We recently tested a disc with a similar situation, "Fragile" by Yes. The back cover proclaimed 96/24 5.1 channels and 192/24 2.0 channels. It turned out that these were created as separate Soundtracks within Group 1 (although the stereo mix turned out to actually be 96/24 instead of the advertised 192/24).
When playing this disc in the C-5xe, it defaulted to Soundtrack 2 which had the stereo mix. I suspect the same would occur with the Talking Heads disc, although we haven't yet tested it. If you get stuck, let us know and we'll figure it out for you.
Follow Ups:
So far I haven't had any significant problems navigating discs on my C-5xe. It's much easier than any other player I've tried/owned. The only frustrating discs have been the ones that advertise 2ch, but don't actually have it. Going on a fruitless search is never any fun. Not much you can do about that. One of the great things about the player is that it is so revealing that it's easy to quickly discern the sonic difference between discrete 2ch tracks and a downmix of the MC tracks. I've had other highly-regarded players in my system that blurred the differences.
Oh, and congratulations on the C-5xe winning Stereophile Product of the Year. It was a well-deserved win.
> > We recently tested a disc with a similar situation, "Fragile" by Yes. < <Charles, I think that what you have just said means that the Ayre C-5xe WILL automatically select the 2-ch program on discs where the 2-ch and 5.1 ch programs are co-located in Group 1. (This also works with the "Audio" button.) This is better logic than some other players which don't default to the 2-ch program (even if the player is setup as 2-ch).
b.t.w. I too have "Fragile" which always defaults to 5.1 (or 5.1 downmix) on my Denon A11 -- however I set-up the player -- whereas, on my cheap 2-ch Panasonic DVD-A boombox machine, it does -- like the C-5x, correctly default to the 2-ch MLP with this disc.
But that's a 'moot point' to me with the Denon, as I listen 99% of the time in 5.1 surround.
While it worked with that particular disc, I can't guarantee that it will always do the same thing with all such discs. One would think so, but the vagaries of DVD-Audio authoring are beyond the comprehension of mere mortals like myself. For example, when playing Groups 3 and 4 of the AIX disc you recommended, the C-5xe always defaulted to Soundtrack 2. In one case this was the 96/24 two-channel soundtrack, and in the other case it was the DTS 5.0 soundtrack. So I have to infer that there is some type of control that the disc exerts over the player. I have no way of knowing which discs might force the player to do something unwanted.
The whole thing could have been really, really easy. Just make two (and *only* two) different soundtracks -- one multi-channel and one stereo. Then allow the *player* to default to one or the other, depending on whether it was set to multi-channel mode or two-channel mode. But that would have made too much sense.... :-(
