Take a look at these two websites for universal players:http://dvda-sacd.webcindario.com/en/dvda-sacd_players.html

anything from MF on CD.
I am looking for the same but probably cannot afford the "very". Is it possible to get a "good" player for less than $500. You cannot get much worse than I have now (proscan dvd player!) Never had a good cd player.
You should consider a Pioneer Elite DV-45a. It is available new for around $325. It's a decent player.
Should the difference be noticeable if I buy at that price point? I have always had cheap Sony, Pioneer, etc. type CD players. Always wondered what it would take to notice a difference. Format change at any price should lead to a difference over the regular players I have had in the past. I have had a basic Sony 200 changer, the ProScan DVD player, a basic Pioneer laser disc, and that old sony 10 disc magazine cd player--that is what level I am used to.
> > Format change at any price should lead to a difference over the regular players I have had in the past. < <I agree that a format change SHOULD lead to a difference; however, reality does not always match up with the ideal. Cheap "universal" players tend to obscure the differences between format types; they tend to all sound pretty much the same on the cheap players.
I recommended the Pioneer Elite model because it does show differences between CD and higher-resolution media.
That makes sense. Are any of the mid-priced Denons any good? I take it the $149 Sony SACD player is not a good choice? thanks.
...quite good as CD players in their respective price ranges (I'm talking the CD players, not the DVD players) and are unsurpassed in SACD for perhaps 10x as much. The CE595 changer at a street price of $159 is probably the best bargain out there right now.

It's sitting comfortably at the top of the heap...See Kal Rubinson's review in Stereophile, as well as Srajan's review on 6moons. I've had the PL-1a for a little over a year, and can't say enough about how much I love it...
