On October 4 , 2005 , Warner released Talking Heads DualDisc Brick which includes 8 Talking Heads albums on 8 DualDiscs with DVD-Audio , housed in a molded white plastic case covered with Talking Heads song titles in raised letters .All of these Talking Heads DualDiscs with DVD-A have Multichannel in 96/24 , and Stereo in 96/24 . Each DualDisc with DVD-A has some video , with the music videos in 5.1 Dolby Digital , and the live performance clips in 2.0 Dolby Digital . Each DualDisc with DVD-A also has some bonus audio tracks .
I am thoroughly enjoying listening to all of the Talking Heads albums in Multichannel DVD-A .
There are many excellent multichannel mixes on these DualDiscs with DVD-A . The rear channels are , generally , very active , and often feature discrete placement of instruments and effects .
My favorite Talking Heads album in Multichannel DVD-A is Remain In Light .
Individual songs that have the best multichannel mixes would include " The Overload " from Remain In Light , " Artists Only " from More Songs About Buildings And Food , and the extended version / alternate 5.1 mix of " Burning Down The House " from Speaking In Tongues .
It is great that Warner has made the effort to release 8 Talking Heads albums on DualDiscs with DVD-A .
Talking Heads DualDisc Brick is the Hi-Rez Highlight Of The Year .
Follow Ups:
I have only listened to "Speaking in Tongues" so far, but the 5.1 mixing and sound quality is on par with the best SACD and DVD-Audio pop releases I own (Such as REM and Pink Floyd).
All 8 discs have 96/24 5.1ch and 96/24 2ch as reported by ZS Kekl. The audio selection (5.1ch/2ch) can be changed by using the AUDIO key of the DVD player. However, this is the bad part for the 2ch audio purists...
None of the disc MLP 2ch tracks match the audio quality of the 5.1 MLP tracks. The 2ch tracks sound compressed and veiled vs the multichannel tracks. Sometimes it isn't as subtle as veiled but covered with a dual layer of velvet cloth. The instrument separation on the multichannel tracks is incredible. It's a holographic image that must be heard. The multichannel mixing was simply a terrific job.
If you are a Pioneer owner the real bad news is that the 588 won't play the dvd-audio side at all and jams the machine. This may be repaired with a firmware upgrade but in Canada you have to pay to send your machine off to eastern canada. They also warn you that you will not be covered if the problem is anything else etc.Glad I have invest in a Premier cd system for my car etc. Never again.
Sorry for the rant but I wait a long time to hear this and the set is $240.00 at A & B Sound. (I have 8 cd's for this and I already owned a couple of them)
I'm tracking a few sets on Ebay right now, but your post has put a damper on my plans.
I much prefer the 5.1 mix, but the sound quality/clarity seems fine. Perhaps the relative instrument levels are slighty different in the Stereo mix, but it still sounds damn good...

1. Chris, This is what Talking Heads website says:-"The eight individual DualDiscs in the upcoming Talking Heads 'Brick' boxset will be available separately in January 2006, at least in the US (first four at the beginning of the month, second four at the end of the month)."
-- so you can test one of the titles, if you wish.
2. Garnot's statement about the 2-ch tracks is not much of a basis to make any conclusion about the 2-ch quality of these discs.
p.s. It is very common for people who are so enamoured by a glorious 5.1 multichannel mix, that when they come to A-B compare with the dedicated vanilla stereo, the stereo version just sounds flat by comparison. That's not the fault in the stereo mixing, but rather the fact that it's stereo, and not the enveloping multichannel soundstage which they've just been immersed in barely a minute earlier.
3. And here is some good news . . .
Martin,I switched both tracks with the AUDIO key to compare them. On all 8 discs. One by one. And on most of them, the difference wasn't a subtle one. The 2ch audio tracks weren't bad, just not up to what you listen in the 5.1ch tracks. And I'm not talking about sounds coming from different places at the same time. It's more about dynamic range and clarity of the sound.
It's not bias. It's real. And the only way to experience it's listening by yourself. So I recommend you to buy the set, whether you're 2ch or 5.1ch fan and hear the difference. Either way, you won't be dissapointed if you compare them to the CD version.
And by the way, I haven't stated that I dislike 2ch. What I've found is a lot (not all) Pop/Rock hi res releases 5.1ch tracks sound superior to their 2ch counterpart because of the master tapes used for the transfer. If you use an existing compressded 2ch CD master to transfer to DSD, don't expect a miracle. Do I have to mention the case of the SACD "Come Away with Me" by Norah Jones? I always compare both tracks to check if I'm misssing something. But some people here love to take words out of context to start a controversy.
I will get them as a box set to complement my Bob Dylan SACD box set.
that the 2 channel MLP mixes are very nice indeed. I can't find any "two veils" installed by the engineer. Every disc from '77 to Naked is very good.

Garnot is merely stating his bias toward multi-channel. He has opined numerous times that the 2ch on discs with MC content is always of poor quality.
I got the brick today. At first, I could only read the multichannel program on these DualDiscs - until I did some fidgeting in my DVD-Audio player software on my computer (Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic soundcard, DVD drive and the DVD-A player software which came with my soundcard). Only then could I play the 2-channel stereo tracks.
simple questions, which are somewhat vague in your post and on the 'net, please? How many of the 8 TH discs have MLP 2.0 on them?
Is the entire album/original track line up in MLP 2.0?
If only a few come with MLP 2.0, which are they, what part is in 2.0, etc.?
All MLP 2.0 content, whatever that might be, is 24/96?
How much did you pay? Did you buy in Canada or the USA? From where, etc? Thanks, Chris
Hi ZS KEKL,
Are the stereo album tracks just remastered from the original stereo masters, or are they remixed for stereo from the multi-track tapes?
if there are 2.0 MLP mirroring the 5.1 MLP programs on ALL of the discs (and it seems like there are,) are the 2.0 MLP programs FOLD DOWNS or pure 2.0 tracks? I'm not too concerned with how the STEREO tracks were derived, only if they are a) there and b) pure STEREO.
> > are the 2.0 MLP programs FOLD DOWNS or pure 2.0 tracks? < <From what Kekl wrote, it does seems that there ARE separate 2.0 MLP 96kHz stereo tracks.
2-channel remains attractive because (equipment) quality of 2-channel playback remains better than for 5-channel in my system.
This is absolutely positively what I hate about dual disc... You just never know what yer gonna get... do you? Aside from that - this is a great post - and I would like to see more of them like this. INFORMATION: The only place I can find out what actual disc content is -- is on THIS forum.... How sad is that? thanks tim.
Bums me out more than a little bit actually. Because of this I only have about 5 DVD-A titles in my collection.
