I heard many players have problem playing DD. Has anyone tried it on DV-50s yet? Afraid of disc stuck inside the player.
Follow Ups:
We have tested the dualdisc format in all ESOTERIC players and they play just fine. There are no clearance issues. There has not been enough time to test the long-range effects of this media. The disc is slightly heavier than a red book CD so it may have some effects on spindle motor reliability off in the future.
Contact Esoteric from their web site. I did the same concerning the UX-1's ability to play Dualdisc. They said no problem. I have had no problems playing DualDiscs.
Many manufacturers have issued disclaimers about using DualDiscs in their equipment. There have been so many disclaimers, I can' remember if Teac Esoteric was one of them. I don't think they did issue a statement. The DV-50s uses a transport partially sourced from Pioneer. Here's what Pioneer has to say about using DualDiscs:
Note that the modifications Teac makes to the transport may mean this information is not appropriate. If it were my player, I would contact Esoteric.
Many owners of a DVD-Audio and Universal players refuse to play DualDisc's as they do not want to take the risk their prized valuable equipment. Martin calls us chickens we are not and here is why:
Here are some charts from Disctronics that show why we are afraid, very afraid to put DualDiscs in our prized DVD-Audio players!!!!!Combination disc formats

The SACD/CD Hybrid are read from the same side: CD layer on bottom (from non-label read side) and SACD layer on top. Thus the laser shines through the translucent SACD layer at a different and angle and thickness to read the CD layer at the 1.2mm CDs require. Total disc thickness is 1.2mm.The DualDisc / DVD Plus is 2 sided so the DVD Side is .6mm and the CD side is .9mm thus the laser hits are wrong angle as CD specs require 1.2mm and very excessive error correction is needed to play the CD side. Total thickness is 1.5mm.
DVD Disc Layout & Formats
All DVDs whither 1 or 2 layers or 1 or 2 sided are DVDs 1.2mm. All DVDs contain two .6mm substrates on a single layer DVD only one contains data, the other being a blank disc. All CDs are 1.2mm, all DVD-Videos even 2 sided 2 layers (see above chart) are 1.2mm, all DVD-Audios are 1.2mm, all SACDs are 1.2mm, but DualDisc is 1.5mm.
All DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, SACD and CD equipment is designed to play 1.2mm discs and 1.2mm discs only, they have a tolerance of -.1mm +.3mm due to irregularities and slightly defective discs. Because of this tolearance it is physically possible to play DualDiscs but the equipment was not designed to be misused this way.
At 1.5mm a DualDisc is at the maximum allowable tolerance and if the disc goes over even a fraction of 1.5mm the spindle will break, as there is no more room. No product in the history of mankind has ever been designed to work at the maximum allowable tolerance and some DualDiscs and DVD Plus are actually thicker than 1.5mm.
That is why I will only buy DVD-Audio's until I can replace my DVD-Audio player with a DVD-Audio player that is DualDisc compatible. We should have some around Christmas.
Once I have a DualDisc compatible DVD-Audio player I will check out DualDisc releases until them I am not taking the risk!
Happy listening,
Teresa
I refuse to buy them even if my DVD player will play them I'm not purchasing a disc that may or maynot play in the rest of my players (and may even damage them) including the player in my car.
Thanks for your advise.I have 300+ SACDs and 30+ DVD-As, but DD has some my favorite albums, such as Slippery When Wet. Guess I better no taking the risk.
" . . . the DVD content side of most DualDiscs will play in most Pioneer home DVD players and recorders, car DVD players including DVD car navigation systems, DVD/CD computer drives and Pro Audio DJ DVD players.*** Please use a Pioneer DVD Audio player to play DVD Audio content on DualDisc. ***

N.B. That disclaimer has not changed for ages. Moreover, Pioneer has reported no pertinent issues whatsoever, following its old statement that it, [quote]: "continues to test this new technology".
Well, Martin419 is really irritated with me right now, so the only advice I am allowed to give you is:"There should be no problems with any players playing DualDiscs, and anyone who claim otherwise is scaremongering and technically incompetent. Indeed, you are foolish for even raising doubts in the first place. So rest assured, and if you ever encounter any problems, it's because you purchased a cheap player and should have bought a more expensive one."
:-)
Seriously, I think Jim Pearce owns an Esoteric DV-50s and has reported no problems playing DualDiscs on that player. You might want to confirm directly with him though.
I'm sure the transport is identical to the DV-50s; I don't know if all DualDiscs are identical. I'm certain that no manufacturer would knowingly put out a product that would damage a Pioneer transport. Quite frankly, I was more concerned about firmware after some of the Universal classical titles on DVD-A wouldn't play on the DV-50. There is a firmware update, but the player needs to go to California - not a likely event. I'll likely buy a few more from Silverline as this one plays without problems.
