I just bought a 2900, and I have a question about playing dvd-a disks. When I play a dvd-a disk, all 6 channel indicators light up on the display. The notes with the disk state that the disk can be played 4 different ways, one of which is enhanced resolution stereo. How do you access the different formats? When playing an SACD, there's a button that is used to toggle between formats, but there is no such button for DVD-A.
Follow Ups:
Thanks for the help so far. I was able to get the disk to play "group two" starting with track 1, and the left and right speaker indicators highlighted to show that playback is stero. However, when the music plays, I get little blips of sound (very brief, like part of a single word, or the initial sound of a guitar) followed by no sound. The pattern keeps repeating (not skipping, it's going through the track but it's just playing brief sounds followed by nothing). Wierd. Have you run into this?I don't know if this is disk related because Harvest is the only DVD-A that I own..
This is a silly question I know but I just had to ask it. Could you have accidentally pressed the fast forward button earlier in the process by chance? I think it tends to "stick" in this mode if I recall, requiring some other button presses to stop it. The fast forward mode is not continuous and acts as you describe. Perhaps useful for video but not at all for audio. I have Harvest and it works fine.I did have one problem with Ray Brown's "Soular Energy" DVD-A on the 24/192 track. It would suddenly burst into extremely loud white noise on one song and just stay there. I applied the firmware update at the link below and that fixed it. If you bought the machine used, it might have the old firmware, but if it's new it should be up to date.
Good question on the FF button. The problem does resemble FF behavior, but that wasn't it. I'll try to pick up another DVDA disk this weekend and see if I have this problem with all DVDAs. I should probably try the firmware upgrade as well.
I have found with my Denon 2900 that it is very sensitive to DVDa's, more so than with SACDs. I ocasionally get skips with a couple of DVDa's, not always, but sometimes. I had the problem you described with Harvest after I modified the 2900. I didn't own Harvest before I modified the unit so I can't say that the mod caused the issue. It has not risen to the level where I would seek repair (off warranty), but it may. Last night I was listening to the Last Waltz and it skipped a few times. At that point the machine was warm, been running for a few hours. No problem with cds or sacds. Very frustrating some times. joe
This is one of those things that's a real pain in the butt with DVD-A if you don't have it hooked up to a TV or monitor. If it's hooked up to a TV, just activate the main menu of the disk and select the two-channel group (if present). If it's not hooked up to a TV, use the Search Mode button to toggle to the "Group Search" mode. You should see "Group" turn on and off on the display as you press the Search Mode button repeatedly. Then press a number key on the numeric keypad to choose the group number. This usually requires some experimentation, as there is inconsistent behavior with different disks as to which group is which. I think the Search Mode button only changes the search mode when the player is in the stop mode, but I don't remember exactly. I had a 2900 but it's not hooked up in my system now, so I can't try it. I rarely used this method as I had it hooked up to a TV. Good luck.
hit 'stop', and then hit, for example, "2 1 play" - that will do Group 2, Track 1. - From what I've seen, Group 2 is -usually- the stereo group, if there is one on the disc.
Michi, I see you're a classic rock fan. What SACDs or DVD-A disks do you have that are classic rock? I just got my player and bought The Police Synchronicity, Neil Young Harvest (see my other post...), and the Allman Brothers at Filmore East. I think they all sound better than I have heard before.
Most recently, Allman Brothers "Eat A Peach" for SACD - and honestly I think that Eagles "Hotel California" is the best DVD-A out there yet. I STRONGLY reccomend that one.America's "Homecoming" is good, too- It's best to just ask me, since I probably have it if it's out there. No sense in just listing them all. :)
I've got a LOT more than that -- I'm practically in line tonight to get the Clapton SACDs tomorrow.
I'll have to pick up all of those. Which Clapton records are coming out? I'm curious about these: Aerosmith Toys in the Attic, Dave Alvin Blackjack David, Oasis What's the Story Morning Glory, and Alice in Chains Greatest Hits. Ever heard these?
Also check out the Grateful Dead "Workingman's Dead" and "American Beauty" on DVD-A. "Workingman's Dead" especially is a huge improvement over the original CD and LP.circuitcity.com in the Music section allows you to search for high-res titles. See the link below.
I would endorse both Grateful Dead titles as well. Very nicely done, MUCH better than the CD on both counts, in my opinion.
I'll have to pick up a copy of working man's dead. I saw that one last weekend at my local cd shop. American Beauty is another must have. Do you have the dark side of the moon sacd?
