On October 26 , 2004 , Gold Medal was released on the new DualDisc format .Gold Medal is a rockin' good album . I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish , as I listened to the good sounding 96/24 multichannel audio .
Vocals are up front .
The band is spread out over all 5 main channels .
The center channel is fully utilized with both vocals , and instruments .
There is some , but not lots , of discrete , and nearly discrete , placement of instruments in the rear channels .
The multichannel mix is not a spectacular demonstration piece . While I would have preferred more discrete placement of instruments , and backing vocals , in the rear channels , I still liked what I heard .
My favorite songs on this album are : " I Don't Want To Know " , " Friends Like Mine " , " Don't Break Me Down " , " Fall Behind Me " , and " Revolver " .
There is one music video on this disc , along with a making of the video feature . The music video " Fall Behind Me " has 5.1 Dolby Digital sound . I always like when labels make the effort to include 5.1 sound on their music videos .
There is an on screen lyrics option .
Multichannel DVD-A can be switched to stereo with a press of the Audio button .
The last song on the CD side is incomplete ( due to what I believe is some type of mastering error , completely unrelated to the DualDisc format ) . While this incomplete song may be unfortunate for some , it is not a tragedy . Just flip over the disc , and there are 4 more versions of the song , and of course , the entire album , available in 96/24 5.1 and 2.0 , and Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 .
As well , if you want to listen to the hidden bonus song " Lost and Found " , it is only available on the DVD side ( at 44.1/16 ) . It is not on the CD side of the DualDisc , and I have read ( but not confirmed ) that it is not on the standard CD version of the album , either .
I have tested this DualDisc in several different players . The appropriate sides always played properly in these players : DVD-A , CD , Laserdisc/CD , and CD ROM . This result is no surprise no me . The test market DualDiscs that I obtained earlier this year , always played properly , too .
In conclusion , I really like the DualDisc format , and I highly recommend The Donnas - Gold Medal DualDisc with DVD-Audio .

Just got the Mavericks DualDisc, and sure enough the DVD side is essentially the DVD-Audio content that was previously released as a DVD-Audio-only disc (hi-res 96/24).Shock of shocks the CD side played in my 1987 JVC CD player with no probs (had to take it out of the closet and dust it off!), and both sides (CD/DVD) played fine in my 1998 second generation Sony DVD player, Onkyo universal player, and Panny RP-91. The latter two players are DVD-A capable, so the hi-res content plays automatically. Both sides also worked fine in my DVD-ROM (Pioneer) in my computer.
However, my OEM CD player in my 2001 Volvo S60 won't recognize the disc. Doesn't get stuck, just says "CD Error" and spits it back out. Tried several times with same result.
Since the only place I'm confined to CD-only playback is my car, this is quite unfortunate. I plan to try some other DualDiscs and check results and will try in as many different vehicles as I can.

was there yesterday, now it's gone. If anybody wants this, they'd better get it quick.
If it's a mastering error, it has probably been withdrawn, and probably will be reissued in a few weeks time with the error corrected.
I just got this e-mail from DualDisc at WMG (which can also be viewed at www.thedonnas.com :Thank you for your email. Please visit The Donnas' web site for the following message posting. We apologize for any inconvenience.

10/27/04 / Atlantic Records responds to issues with The Donnas DualDisc
AllWe know a number of you have already spotted the production error on the CD-side of the GOLD MEDAL DualDisc. This mistake occured at Atlantic's production plant, and we're sorry to report that the error is present on the entire run. Specifically, the final track "Have You No Pride" cuts off after 58 seconds on the CD side. However, if you listen to the DVD side, you can still enjoy the track in its entirety in 5.1 Surround Sound.
If you would like to return the DualDisc, please go back to your local retailer with your original receipt and they will replace it with the regular GOLD MEDAL CD. Feel free to keep the special black velvet limited edition cover. Unfortunately, the DualDisc is being recalled from all stores and will NOT be re-manufactured immediately, although we hope to announce plans for another run at later date (stay tuned to The Donnas' web site for details).
If you decide to keep the DualDisc, email us at: dualdisc@atlantic-records.com and we'll provide you with a free, CD-quality download of "Have You No Pride."
Atlantic Records deeply regrets this situation, and we would like to extend our apologies to The Donnas fans and to the band.
ask them to pay more money for the dualdisc.if it doesn't work, withdraw it from sale and have no "immediate plans" for a reissue.
offer to substitute with a cd.
it sounds like a plan designed by an SACD fanatic intent on ensuring DualDiscs will never be successful. where is james bond and how come this cunningly evil masterplan wasn't foiled?

.
She can't be wrong. :)They pulled of a neat trick to start of DualDisc by introducing a rare collectors item.
Why else release this as a 'limited special edition' 50k production run in the first place? We all know how sophisticated Crest dealt with the cracks developing issues.
Utter silence and no apologies is the best way to clear up any doubt and confusion in the consumer market about quality issues.
the perfect troll. However you missed the opportunity to have a spin on the 'free cd quality' download.
So it's a B+ :)
I wonder if the 'no immediate plans' has something to do with the pressing facility fully booked for other DD releases.
I don't dislike the Donnas. They fall into that large category of I can take or leave them. If I stumbled across a used CD real cheap, I'd buy it. Very low priority. The Dualdisk is of no interest to me. The only reason I looked at it on amazon at all was to see if the regular music buyers who post reviews there were on board with the whole "Dualdisk is the future of music" that the more rabid propagandists sprout here. They weren't. They were mostly unhappy with their purchase. A hell of a way to roll out this product.
