I bought the Donnas DualDisc yesterday and I have had nothing but problems with the disc overall.First off the CD side of the DualDisc has a mastering error, as the last cut on the album "Have you no Pride" is cut - the full song does not appear on the CD side.
Secondly the CD side of the DualDisc won't play in either my Sony XA777ES or Sony C333ES. It plays, with much trouble, in my Denon 3800 - where it has trouble locking on to the CD data, and once it does you can only play the album straight through. If you try to skip tracks it sends the player into no where land and everything freezes up. The only CD player where the CD layer plays fine is in my car. This is not good for the success of DualDisc AT ALL.
In it's favor the DVD-Audio side played fine in my Denon 3800, but the purpose of DualDisc is to have both the CD and DVD side play perfectly. If my two SACD/CD players are part of the limited number of models that won't play a DualDisc CD side, I forsee major problems.
Follow Ups:
In order to provide the thickness needed for the DVD Side.common sense would tell you this is not a good idea., But common sense is not what teh record companies seem to have any of.
I was reading the spec for dual disc, and was thinking to myself what happens when none of these will play in 50% of the players.
the answer of cours will be Well your CD player is outdated, and you need to upgrade. Bull S__it
Thisnis whats wrong with the music industry and the computer industry.
More just to do with the horrible quality that record companies are putting out... How could a clipped track be missed before it went out to stores? That's just horrible QC.More and more of the CDs I buy are pre-scratched, pre-fingerprinted, and jewel cases pre-cracked before they even come out of the shrink wrap.
The case for the Donnas DualDisc that I got was pretty much shattered --- UNDER the 'velvet' liner that came around it (which was not damaged at all) ...
This isn't a DualDisc problem, it's a record company problem. I haven't had any problems getting the DD to -play-, but the last track is definitely cut.

On another note, I bought the Simple Plan DualDisc for my 10 year old daughter, and even in her simple CD boombox, we can't get the DualDisc to play.
So far I have purchased two DualDiscs (The Donnas and Simple Plan) and I CANNOT play the CD layer on either in my home. The only CD players that play the CD layer are two Sony CD Walkman and my car CD player.
What good is a format where I can't play the CD layer on 90% of the CD players I own???

Wow, you own 30 CD player? That's quite impressive.
I've had a 100% success rate across > twenty drives, from slot loading car units to PCs to standalone players.

I was being facetious.Weird though, the 3 players I have hooked up to my home system, Sony XA777ES, Sony C333ES and Denon 3800 all refuse to play the CD layers on the two dualdiscs.
Yes, I forgot, the CD layer plays fine on my PC drive. I was able to extract the data and burn a copy for my daughter so she could listen to the darn Simple Plan album.
Ok - so true numbers than - the DualDisc won't play in my three main players nor in my daughter's boombox. They will play in 2 Sony Walkman, my car CD player and our PC. So it won't play in 50% of my CD players. Still not a good number in my estimation, and this time I am serious.
I truly do not like DualDisc. Any format that won't play in more than a few players (and the Sony XA777ES and Sony C333ES are quality players) is not a viable format overall. They should be shooting for near 100% compatibility with these discs, but they haven't.
The more I learn about DualDisc, the less I like it.1) Compatibility problems
2) Compromised CD side (max 60 minutes)
3) Compromised DVD side (DVD-5 instead of DVD-9)
4) DVD content compromise: tries to appeal to mass market (video) and audiophiles (HiRez audio) simultaneouslyConsidering the costs of (1), I wonder whether the record companies are really saving anything, from a purely bean-counter perspective, versus simply putting two seperate discs in the package.
I suppose it might not sell so well when people find the flaw.Maybe they can replace defective discs?
while i do prefer SACD because of the simplicity of use (no video required), i have a universal player and love the only dvd-audios i have. (pet sounds and glen phillips)i've hesitated to buy any others because i hate not being able to listen to pet sounds in the car and i hate repeat-purchases any more than i have to. i figured dual-disc might give me more options in what i purchase, but it seems that at least for now it is too problematic.
i really don't care who wins this format war as long as hi-res survives in some form. i'm afraid this might be a bad sign for the dvd-a side of it.
The DVDA side doesn't have a problem. It's the CD side on Sony sacd players having problems. Could be the disc. Or some sort of issue with the Sony's having problems meeting the max thickness spec of a CD.
(Seen many post on how critical alignment of these drives can be.)
dude - it's not playing the last track on *all* cd players, not just sony ones. i'm sure the dvd-a content works fine, but that doesn't help me one bit.regardless, i wouldn't have purchased *this* title, anyway, but it makes me wary of future releases.
plus, i use a sony scd-555es at work, so that is an issue for me.
Too early to tell or start class action lawsuits. Last track not playing could be a authoring issue or a DualDisc technology issue. Not clear to me if it is just left off or defective.
I have to believe that it is a mastering error when creating the DualDisc. The full song is on the DVD-Audio side, as well as on the redbook CD issue. It appears to be an unfortunate error, not a good one to make when releasing your first widespread commercial DualDisc.
I've seen this sort of this happen before. And it's absolutely nothing to do with the format per se. Rather some chap in the mastering studio must have made a small mistake, and in the rush to get it out, the discs weren’t checked thoroughly enough. I've already alerted Warner, and I expect this issue will be corrected. Sure, it will be an embarrassment to them, but I expect them step up to the mark and sort it out. And that’s what counts at the end of the day.As for the other compatibility issues, well so far the DVD sides of DualDiscs work in every DVD player, and the CD sides work in every vanilla CD player (including car ones).
The only players where the CD layer sometimes has issues, is in some DVD players (but then that’s what the DVD side is for), and also some [Sony] CD/SACD players (well I can’t comment about them because I don’t have one).

Herein lies the big problem for me. The only CD players I have hooked up to my system are two Sony CD/SACD players and a DVD-Audio/Video player. Hence I really cannot play the CD side on my home system. I do have the DVD-Audio player for that, but what happens if someday I do not have a DVD-Audio player - then I cannot play the Donnas disc. I guess I could go out and buy the CD at that time, but that defeats the purpose of the DualDisc.
I do have a plain vanilla CD player in the closet (a Denon circa 1987), but I haven't used it in years and I don't plan on using it just to play one disc. I also have the Sony CE775 boxed up in the closet, and I read a post on the Hoffman board where someone had no problems playing the CD side in that player, but again I am not going to hook up that player just for one disc.
. . . I'd like to know what you think of the 96kHz/24bit 5.1 MLP mix sound quality? (And the music/songs, of course.) Also, what are the extras like?
The 5.1 mix is OK. Nothing to write home about. Most of the mix comes from the front three channels, with vocals, bass and kick drum (as well as snare) from the center channel speaker. Right and left front are mostly guitars and other drums. The rears are used for room ambience and drum/cymbal "slap echo".Sound quality of OK - not great. As for the extras I didn't watch them yet, but there appears to be two video options (one I understand is a video and the other is a "making of" mini-documentary).
Out of 7 reviews by Donnas fans, 4 of them specifically say go for the CD instead. 2 people discuss the flaw in the last song on the CD side, 1 guy says the CD side can't be ripped to Itunes, and the 4th one just doesn't like 2 sided disks. I wonder if the CD side is copy protected? There are quite a few people that avoid these copy protected disks.
