just picked this one up. Sonics are not as spectacular as "I Robot", especially what would consitute side A. cymbals seemed lacking in timbre and reverb decay. voices not layered in full detail. For some reason it seemed to me that "Side B" had much imporved sonics. Will need a few more listens to confirm. Definitely a major upgrade from the CD and worth it but if i want to show off the system "I Robot" is the better choice.
Follow Ups:
Too bad they couldn't release a M/C version. I snap that up fast. I still might buy it since I love this album. Thanks for the review.
The only alan parsons i like are i robot and tales of mystery and imagination, and i already have both on multiple formats (LP, CD, HDAD for i robot ...)i have placed an order for close encounters - wonder whether that's any good. the lp is one of my favourites, but the closing theme has a bit of gain riding that i don't like
Um, gave it another serious listen last night. Comments about the lack of timbre on the cymblas still stands, I think this is in the recording itself. Sounded Much better to me the second and third times through. I agree, I Robot and Turn of a Friendly Card are the ones to get and I will give this a good recommendation.I also agree, too bad no multichannel. One of the problems i have is the 192/24 side goes full range to my fronts without the subwoofer. To get the sub involved i have to use the 96/24 side. I didn't notice as big a difference between the two sides as I did with I Robot. Who knows, maybe my ears are full of mush. i would hate to turn away sales from a worthy effort!
I finally got a chance to pop this into my player today and was wondering what you were listening to that I wasn't. I agree that the cymbals aren't the best, it is a good (not great) recording.I do wonder if this isn't a bit overly compressed, which wouldn't be the fault of Classic Records, as I recall this always a bit harsh on the cymbals.

John Kotches
