APL Hifi is Alex Peychev, look under the "products" page. Bear in mind that there's a significant waiting line for his products, though.I didn't mention the Denon units, but there's a solid range of models, from $300 to $2000, very good if you like the Denon sound, you can just search the archives for many comments by inmates here and on the Highway.
Considering all the problems I had with my Marantz 8300 (still at the shop after two months, third time in about a year), I wouldn't recommend that brand, even though the sound is good.

Eric,I didn't know till know you had problems with DV-8300. I have had one for about a year, and I haven't had any problems.
Did you have yours modded? I didn't.
Mine doesn't get that heavy of use--I only listen a couple of hours a week, but no problem.
Yes, I had many problems for the past year, and I can't blame it all on Marantz. It worked fine for about 10 months and then started a bad sound on the left channel. At some point I thought it was my preamp, so I took it for repairing (took a long time), then I realized the noise was still there and it turned out the noise was my DV-8300.
I took it twice for repair, each time about a month, and then they said according to their tests there was no problem. So what I did is that I captured a mono recording (dual mono) through my soundcard, and analyzed the charts. It was obvious that one of the channels was clipped above a certain level, so I took my DV-8300 back to the shop with the chart, and... I haven't heard back from them in 2.5 months. Whenever I call they say "Gosh yes, that's a long time, we'll look into it right away and get back to you". Then of course they never call back.
Unfortunately, I discovered too late that the problem was most likely with the transformer, and I could have sent that part to change to a real professional, but it was too late.
My biggest beef about the 8300 is that Marantz never bothered to upgrade the firmware. Since it's a Pioneer-based model, the player cannot play large DVD-Audio structures, and that's a real drag.
I know it's not very interesting, but thanks for the opportunity to whine a little about it, it makes me feel better, I guess :)
Cheers

Eric,
What do you mean by large dvd-a structures? My 8400 never has a problem playing dvd-a except sometimes it is hard to get to the menu.
Walter,This is the "30-odd track" bug of home made DVD-Audio discs authored with discWelder Steel (and maybe Bronze), which has been raised many times here. In that software, you can only author in one group, up to 99 tracks, as per the DVD-Audio spec. But some players (essentially the Pioneer Elite and related models) cannot read a DVD-Audio with a group containing more than 30, sometimes less, tracks. The player would just hang when loading the structure.
However, my DV-8300 have never had a problem playing a commercial release, because most professional discs have several groups, and less than 25 titles per group.
I think this problem will soon be History, now that Wavelab offers the ability to have several groups in a structure, Minnetonka will have to either offer that for future versions of Steel, or lower the price of Chrome (I hope Minnetonka reads this :)
Best
