I own just two dvd-audio:
"Pet sounds" by Beach Boys
"Vespertine" by Bjork.I think both of them are really amazing, both for musical content and for sound quality.
I confess that I ignored Beach Boys (prior purchasing dvd-a "Pet sounds"). Thought they were just surf, sea and California girls. But "Pet sounds" is an enchanting album, a so tender, sweet, deeply emotional piece of art! And the restoring of the dvd-a is stunning: the original mono, the stereo version and the multichannel from the various studio recorded tracks. A fine work! Great clarity and detail, no noise at all, the voices are perfectly present and natural. A delight which comes straight from heaven.
The other is Bjork's "Vespertine". I consider Bjork one of the highest voices in all wordlmide contemporary art. Maybe this disc is her greatest achievement so far, a big "maturity album". The various songs are jem after jem, a dozen of marvels. Sonically it is also stunning, even it may seem to offer the dvd-audio capabilities at their minimum: only 48000 hz 24 bit, both in stereo and multichannel. In this case, the increased precision permitted by 24 bits probablhelps reaching a solid, almost "materical", so natural, with a great sense of presence.
I'm enthusiast of such musical recordings. Are there other dvd-audio disc of the same artist and sonic level?
Follow Ups:
Someone below mentioned that Beck's Sea Change has come out on DVD-A. Even if you are not a Beck fan, this album will amaze you. The music is great, and the SACD is the best audio I own. If it's available on DVD-A, it's a must buy for you IMO.
Within a week for DVD-A recordings. Perhaps with SACD, a month since there is a bit more to dig into with that format.
You might like The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Also, if you like their music, the Yes Fragile disc is quite good.
