I have an Anthem AVM20 v2.1 Pre-amp. Need to buy a universal player that will allow me to send a digital DVD-A, SACD signal to the anthem for Digital to Analog conversaion. 1. What player do you recommend? 2. What connection is recommended?
Follow Ups:
It is possible with every DVD-player.What you need is a s/pdif transmitter chip capable of 24/192, like the AKM4103 or if you want to output more than 2 channels, the AKM4101.
For the stereo version (AKM4103) you just have to fetch plus and gnd from your DVD audio-board, and connect LRclock, bitclock, data, and system clock from the DAC-chip to the transmitter, which then outputs the s/pdif signal up to 192kHz.
You need a separate switch, because if you want to go to 192, you have to switch the divide ratio of the chip.

http://www.asahi-kasei.co.jp/akm/en/product/ak4101a/ak4101a.htmlThat was it. Its really a thing we need, as we'd be able to play high-res through our R2R DACs, which I consider the only way, that makes sense (or music).
Happy soldering,
Charles :)
Hi Pauly,
You've asked some very good questions. Unfortunately, the answers are a little complicated. I also own an AVM20, and I have a Denon DVD-5900 for multichannel audio. Here are a few things to consider:
1.) The AVM20 has very good analog stages (in an out) for analog direct passthrough. However the DAC's in the AVM20, which aren't bad, aren't the best. In my system, the DVD-5900 has better DAC's, so I decided to use them instead of the AVM20's. Therefore, I am using the 6-channel analog input on the Anthem and have it set for Analog Direct.2.) The DVDUpgrades mod board that Urs posted looks very interesting for sending a digital signal out. However, I was curious about a few things. Does this quote, "Installation requires around 20-30 cables to be installed; proper grounding will be very important (that's why we haven't figured out the cable count yet)," mean that each digital channel out require individual digital cables? That's a lot of Kimber D-60's...as an example. Also, I'm not an EE, but doesn't this also introduce the possibility of increased jitter for each channel?
3.) Finally, rumor has it that Anthem is working on a universal digital connection, but they have been very quiet as to what it will be or when it will be introduced. Even the new Statement D1 processor, which will be in stores soon, will not have this connection on initial release. If, and when, Anthem implements this as an upgrade, then this might be your best bet. This connection, whether it be some form of HDMI (I'm suspecting) or firewire, will contain all six audio channels in one digital connection, and it will minimize jitter. This scenario will allow your AVM20 to do the processing for bass management and time alignment and utilize the AVM20's DAC's and analog output stages. Therefore, the universal player that you purchase should have one of these active connections.
I think that time will tell, since I am fairly certain that Anthem/SFI will incorporate the universal digital connection soon. The fact that you do not have a player yet is actually a very good thing, since it will not limit your choices. I hope this makes sense and helps in your decision.
This 20+ cable thing is about hardwiring the board to the dac inputs in the players guts. The actual connection to outboard dac is trough 3 seperate spdif outputs. My guess is that each Front L/R, Rear L/R and Center/LFE pairing will use one spdif output.
Thank you Frank. This makes complete sense and correlates with the picture showing three coax RCA connections. However, it seems as though you will still need 3 digital coax cables and jitter will still be an issue.
Thank you Ken for the very comprehensive response. My overall take is to purchase something like the pioneer 47ai with firewire and hope anthem issues a firewire card for the avm-20 firewire expansion slot. Thanks again.
You're welcome Pauly. I've been thinking about this for the past 5 months, so I did some research on the possibilities for connections and to make the best of what I own. In my system, I felt that the complete analog route was the best. Now, I also believe in modifications of these analog stages. :-)In your system, I think that you have the right idea with the 47ai, since it has an active i.Link/firewire output. I hope that Anthem/SFI will incorporate this into their upgrade. However Nick, in customer service at Anthem/SFI, has been saying that "HDMI is gaining ground." I guess we'll just wait and see...Maybe the upgrade will have both.
Yes, possible :-). The board from Speak RS / DVDupgrades works now with the following players:
- Pioneer DV 45
- Pioneer DV 656
- Pioneer DV 757
- Pioneer DV 868
and is available for distributors and the press.
So the product will ship shortly.Support for other players (Pioneer 747 will work shortly, Denon players currently subject to development) will follow.
With sacd spdif is not allowed.Hires from DVDA through the spdiff is possible (stereo only) but it depends on player and copy/protection settings on the actual disc itself.
Not all players allow 24/96 from the digital out. Pioneer, Denon and Panasonic allow it on their models.
DVD Audio's that allow 24/96 are from Hires, AIX, EMI titles (classic titles from EMI allow 24/48) no doubt that a few other labels allow it too.
Homegrown DVDA's created with Discwelder also allow 24/96 out.

Does Discwelder defeat copywrite protection? Or does it just ignore it?

Discwelder Steel can't create digital copies from DVD Audio's.It's software to create DVD Audio disc.
