The article is in French and say that the dual disc was a flop.http://fr.news.yahoo.com/040416/7/3qz0t.html
Follow Ups:
The article mainly talks about DVDPlus the competitor of Dualdisc (AFAIK the inventor of DVDPlus claims he owns the patent and plans to attack Dualdisk). The article says that one French artist (Kool Shen) is going to release one DVDPlus (100000 copies), the price will be identical to the CD. The company pressing these DVDPlus format (only one company: Digital Valley in France) is very optimistic about the format (orders for several millions of DVDplus are in the queue for 2004). They also mention that another well known French artist (Mc Solar) wanted to go to DVDPlus but Warner wanted to force him to go to Dualdisc and then the guy decided to give up and stayed on CD. They then say that Dualdisc is far from being a success in the States...
It's probably worth reading the HFR piece about DualDisc and DVDPlus, apparently those guys always put up a stink but never do anything about the "supposed" patent issues. IMHO, they're all bluff.More galling is this nonsense about DualDisc not being a success, I mean, how could it be? Discs were only available in two cities and then only in selected stores. DualDisc was only a test, nothing less than a nationwide release will really tell us if the format has any legs.
There isn't going to be a national release. The test market failed.
> There isn't going to be a national release. The test market failed. <Yeah, right. Which one of the brothers Warner are you again?
Did your "uncle" at Warner tell you that?

note, here is the DVDplus patent belonging to Dieter Dierks

Thanks for that link - really interesting (hadn't seen that before). The question still remains; if Dierks really has this technology nailed down, why no law suits and why such bullish behaviour from the DualDisc consortium?
Hi,The fact that he has a patent does not mean that a law suit is automatic, it is up to the owner of the patent to initiate it if he wants (he is perhaps negociating first).
The hybrid format DVDPlus s'offre a promo shock with Kool Shen Sony Music and SME of l'Eure will launch to 100.000 specimens l'album solo of the rappor of NTM. Its format is particular: a face CD and another DVD. A solution to dam up the hacking of music, according to its promoters. Vis-a-vis with the remote loading "sauvage" of music on the Net, the professionals of the disc have two choices: to protect their products against the copy or to try to allure the customers with added value. C'est from this second point of view qu'est born the "DVDPlus", a disc equipped d'une audio face as on traditional CD (650 Mo) and d'une video face as on a DVD (4,7 Go). The technical difficulty was not to exceed 1,5 millimetre d epaissor, in order to preserve a compatibility with platinums of the market. The process was found in 2002 by a German engineer of the name of Dieter Dierks. But c'est l'année following that the French company DIGITAL Valley, which in acquired the exclusive licence on a world level, developed the manufacturing process at the industrial level. This company, based in l'Eure, is thus l unic manufacturer (or "presseur" according to the jargon of the trade) of this type of disc. DIGITAL Valley put large on these new media. It will launch next Monday, April 19, the first marketing on a large scale of DVDPlus. C'est the distributor Sony Music France which tries l'aventure with the rappor Kool Shen (of group NTM), for the exit of its first album solo entitled "Dernier round". 100.000 specimens were ordered from DIGITAL Valley. They will be marketed at the same price qu'un traditional CD, that is to say approximately 17 euros. A spare wheel for DIGITAL Valley "After some tests, above all in the United States with 30.000 already sold discs, it s'agit of our first large DVDPlus project", explains one at DIGITAL Valley. This company of 120 people created ten years ago with l'origine is specialized in the duplication of cassettes VHS. It knew still a year ago of serious financial difficulties before miser on DVDPlus, explains one in-house. In addition to l'album of Kool Shen, "orders of several million DVDPlus" would be in hand for 2004. Questioned recently by the Echoes, its general manager, Al Fetouhi, counted on a figure d'affaires of 30 d'euro million in 2004, against 18 million in 2003. What to go up the slope. The company also put on the manufacture of DVD-R in more of its traditional activities. With with the key l'ouverture d'une factory in Caen, which should engage 140 people. A true response to the wild remote loading "the first victims of the remote loading are the independent ones and the artists who begin", estimates the singer, d'après the person in charge marketing for his label baptized "IV my people". "Rather than d'imposer of the constraints to the consumers, it is necessary to develop the product, which allows DVDPlus", one within the independent label continues. "We are against the wild remote loading of music", precise in ZDNet Eric Clairsin, director of Music Message, company specialized in the discs in series limited and intermediate commercial for this operation between "IV my people", and DIGITAL Valley. "I believe that the good solution is to offer to the consumers a product with a real value added without increase in price, or at least small proportion. The public will be then less inclined with going to pirate the music on the Net. This n'est not with the systems anticopie that l'on will dam up the hacking, because no n'est inviolable." According to the person in charge for Music Message, "there is piracy on a large scale when the product is too expensive compared to what the consumer estimates to have to pay. However, since l'on cannot lower the price of CD, for example thanks to a fall of the VAT from 19,6% to 5,5%, the solution is to d'offrir no-claims bonus." Mc Solaar Was Interested Initially, another rappor, Mc Solaar, was ready to sign, with his house of disc Warner Music France, to launch his last album "Mach 6" in DVDPlus, one at DIGITAL Valley entrusts. A finally abandoned project. "the American head office refused because it preferred to pass by its own presser", explains our interlocutor. Warner would have also tested d'imposer with the rappor his concurrent solution baptized Dual Disc. Finally, l artist would have preferred all to give up. Dual Disc is him also based on the principle of the hybrid disc, with a face CD and a face DVD. The weather is l'objet d'une tentative industrial in the United States, which for l'instant is far d'avoir magic the public. It is developed by Sony, BMG and Warner, and was launched at the end of 2003. "This system was refused by the market quite simply because it did not function, the problems of compatibility were too numerous", ensures Eric Clairsin.
