Picked up one of these for $99 last week at my local (independent) electronics store. No SACD but it does play DVD-A, which is what I have been using it for. So far the sound on DVD-A's is a bit bright and thin to my ears. Hopefully the sound will mellow a little after some more use. FWIW I have been listening to mostly PPCM tracks on the 2 channel setting via stereo outs > Cardas Cross > Grado headphone amp > Sennheiser 600's.The DVD 4900 is very simple to use...at least for 2 channel DVD-A playback. Unlike other decks I have used, I have not yet been able to display the bit rate upon playback. As the 2 channel rez is sometimes different than what is labeled on the DVD-A cover, I really like being able to see the actual rates.
Any other folks using the DVD 4900? Is there a way to display the actual rez levels during DVD-A playback? Anyone had any luck with mods to the DVD 4900?
Paul

Without getting into more intensive mods, simply replacing the glass fuse in the Toshiba (I am assuming it is similar to my 430V) that is located on the power supply board close to where the power cord enters the unit with a ceramic (250V 1.6A 20mm. fuse) will significantly flesh things out and alleviate that brightness. Getting rid of the nickel plated male on the power cord and replacing it with something like a Marinco 5266 will also help out. Without spending a lot of money you can do things like this which will really improve the player:

On the Toshiba SD 5700 and SD 4800 you have to go to the navi menu, go to display, and the bit rate is shown. Should be an explanation in the manual. Of course it has to be hooked to a monitor.
That's what I've been doing but all I can get for output display on my monitor is 2 channel or 5.1 (plus info on PCM, PPCM, Dolby etc.) I have not been able to display the actual rez info of the DVD-A that is playing (24/96 or whatever.) I'll try some more tonight and see if I can make it happen. Hopefully its just me not hitting the correct button(s) on the remote.......
