I've had a DVD player capable of playing DVD-A's for nearly a year. And, I've had a cheap Yamaha AV Receiver with 6 Analog inputs for the past 6 months. But only today did I play my first DVD-A and what a DVD-A it was. Eric Johnson's "Ah Via Musicom."I don't have the DVD player connected to a TV and so the settings may be off, but it still sounds pretty great. This DVD-A doesn't have a 2 channel version, but the 5.1 is pretty nice.
Follow Ups:
Glad you're enjoying it, but I think this release was supposedly so bad Eric Johnson himself disowned it, vowed to have it remixed and released proper, and then it never happened, as far as I know. Check out this review:http://www.highfidelityreview.com/reviews/review.asp?reviewnumber=584338
I have the CD and the mix is quite different. Eric is an extremely sensitive listener to his music. He obsesses about his tone constantly, so, I can see how this might not be his favorite sound. However, I find it very enveloping and quite entertaining, even if Eric is beet red about it's sound.
Agree.. Good rock and roll. Very good guitarist. I saw him live in Austin in 1986 I think. Good jam-master and virtuoso on the guitar. I have the CD and I enjoy breaking it out when the buzz is right.. :-)
He obsesses about cables, absolute phase on each connection of his setup, batteries, and getting the sound just right in every facet of his playing. I think this is a large part of the reason he doesn't tour much -- its too hard to maintain that kind of control while on the road -- and why he releases so few recordings. I watched him play a concert for Austin City Limits when it aired on PBS-- and was shocked to see him playing live.
He's one of my guitar heros and all three of his CD's that I have reflect his personality.
Pretty good show, more singing and less sterile than what few of his albums I had heard. Maybe he should loosen up and rock out(side) more often.
self critical and buy the DVDA. I wish Manahtten was on it; such a BEAUTIFUL tune.

GREAT GEAR DESTROYER!!!
I found a copy on the store shelves last year and bought it to see what the fuss was about. I think it's actually quite good. Sound quality is excellent, so it comes down to personal preference on the mix.
> ...so bad Eric Johnson himself disowned it, vowed to have it remixed and released proper, and then it never happened, as far as I know. <That's basically it; I sent an email to the Eric Johnson web site and the reply was basically that the whole project was scrapped. Any mention of the DVD-A and Eric turns bright red with rage apparently, the only good thing is that it's becoming a collectors' item.
