If you can, buy all three. Personally, I have a large collection of American composers (some good, others not so good) so I bought the Grofe. The Bournemouth S.O. is an excellent orchestra. It was the one that Simon Rattle conducted for quite a time before going over to Berlin Philharmonic and is an excellent ensemble.
The Russian State S.O. is quite good, although I have other Naxos CDs by them in some of which their playing is a little rough. However, the quality of the Shostakovich CD is good.
If you can stomach Grofe's music, OK, and the Elgar is a decent performance.OTOH, Rattle was not the conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony. He was conductor of the Birmingham Symphony. Quite different.
1. No. I do not necessarily enjoy Grofe (as a composer, of course). However, I have been collecting "serious" american composers for many years and use the records and discs in my classes and, whether I like his music or not, he falls into the category.2. I stand corrected, it was Birmingham. Hmmm...Alzheimer's already? At my age? No...!!
Anyone know if Naxos puts PCM audio in the DVD-Video section?
The others are OK if you like the music but the Shostakovich is wonderful.
