Long time lurker, first time poster. I know this is kind of ancient history at this point, but I recently took advantage of Classic's sale of DAD's, buying the Gershwin, Coltrane, & John Lee Hooker (Mr. Lucky) discs. When I play them on my Denon 3800 (yes, THAT 3800 - no chroma or laser issues, plays very well) a strange thing happens. No digital PCM is output for the Gershwin or Coltrane, but IS for the Hooker.I've set the receive (Denon 2803) mode to PCM & left the DVD setting for LPCM to 'off'; this is supposed to allow PCM up to 96Khz to pass thru the digital output. The set-up hints for the DVD player seem to imply that for discs like these, one should use only analog connections, which does in fact work, but one of the benefits of these discs (no copyright protection) is that the high res material can be played via the digital connection. It's almost as though the player is reading these two discs as copy-protected...
I'm still a newbie at this so I'm pretty sure I've missed something, but the fact that the Hooker disc plays fine via digital tells me that my set-up isn't completely off. Thanks for any comments.

The discs you have are 24/96. The Denon DVD3800 will pass 24/96 over the digital connection. To do this, you can try two things: set the player to bitstream or LPCM . Either one or both of these settings will give you a 24/96 output. There may also be a menu setting for downsampling -- on/off -- (96kHz vs 48kHz). Set it to 96kHz and it will pass through the digital output.Your AVR2803 will accept a 24/96 input. Unfortunately, the D/A converters in the AVR2803 are inferior to the ones in the DVD3800. I would suggest that you use the analog outputs of the DVD player when you listen to music, but only if there is no A/D conversion on the input of the AVR2803 that you choose to use. If there is any A/D conversion and you can't get around it or turn it off, use the digital out on the DVD player to the digital input on the receiver.
regarding digital output & LPCM. For the former, I can choose between 'normal' & 'PCM' (I believe this distinguishes between bitstream & PCM digital output in cases where the receiver can't do it). 'Normal' should send PCM via digital out.For the LPCM set-up, selecting the 'on' position does enable the digital output, but only after downmixing from 96Khz to 48Khz (the 3800 has no setting for 96 vs. 48, per se).
It sounds like I should just go analog at this point. As a newbie, I hadn't even considered what you said about the A/D & D/A conversion in these units. To my knowledge, there is no A/D conversion happening in the AVR 2803 when using the analog output of the DVD, but to be perfectly honest, I don't know. Is there a way to tell for sure?
Thanks again for your thoughts on this.

So the setup should be "normal" and "off" for a 24/96 signal to be sent to a receiver/processor.
You might want to do a search on AVS Forum in the "Receivers and Processors" section to find out if the AVR2803 has analog pass-thru on any of the stereo inputs.
Some DVD players will read those discs and only pass 48k via a digital connection, the same as DVD-V. Some players have selectable 48k or 96k. You may want to look at set-up in the player, not familiar with the 3800.
