At the website highfidelityreview.com there is an interesting interview with Steven Wilson as well as a very extensive review of the DVD audio disk of In Absentia. The reviewer states that he feels In Absentia may be one of the must-have disks of 2004. After listening to my copy today, I have to agree. The mix is pretty cool without being too gimmicky. At times, it is completely immersive. Porcupine Tree, with there lush harmonies and layered keyboards and guitars, are the perfect band for surround. The only drawback is In Absentia is a 24bit/48K Protools derived recording. Therefore, you won't get the kind of resolution obtainable from one featuring a 96K or 192K bitstream. Still, I think it sounds grand--certainly better than the CD. The bonus tracks are pretty good too.
Follow Ups:
Is the lower resolution primarily between it is technically not one of the "hi-rez" formats--SACD or DVD-Audio, but instead, recorded in DTS?I recognize that DVD-A is often less than hi-rez (e.g., Sheryl Crow & many others), but what are the "standard" DTS specs?
regards, townsend
P.S. I have In Absentia on CD, my one & only Porcupine Tree, and I agree, it's a fine album of music. But don't listen to multi-channel music . . . yet. Very difficult to do w/ two speakers, regardless of placement.
Townsend,In Absentia is my least favorite by far of PT's output[Too Heavy Metal].Get Como Divine,A Live cd[Best songs/hits etc.],Sky Moves Sideways[If you like Pink Floydish stuff.or Stupid Dreams if you like the Beatles and Floyd mixed together.DON"T judge them by Absentia,Anything else is more representive. If I had to describe them in general,it would be 60's Beatles Psych/70's Floyd Prog Rock. All their albums are Great!Absentia, not for me.JD
It's recorded in 24 bits 48kHz PCM.It's not recorded in DTS. DTS is just a delivery format.
I stand corrected. Thanks for the clarification.
