From DVD-A quality to CD quality to video quality, can I get anything better now for around $400? I understand that universal players do a lousy job with redbook. I have an ES222 for SACD. So, should I upgrade when I buy my HDTV?
Follow Ups:
It is one of the best sounding DVD-Audio and CD units out there, the Analogue output is wonderful. The Video output sucks by comparison. So buy something else for that.
I've been very happy with my 9200. It's redbook playback was better than that on my SCD-C555ES. I ended up selling the 555ES after a year. 99% of my listening at home is to vinyl, so I moved the 9200 to my office system. I use a cheap sony dvd/sacd player for my old s-video-only sony trinitron. Works fine for now. Thanks to many of the posters on this board (especially Eric LeRouge), I'm now recording my vinyl and burning DVD-A's for the office. The redbook and DVD-A sound I get at the office from my 9200 is amazing. I have no desire to upgrade -- for the moment...
Your burning DVD-A? MLP??? Or burning wav files onto DVD?
I record from vinyl to my Alesis Masterlink at 24/88.2. You can then burn the music onto a CD-R in the Masterlink's CD24 format. Essentially, it copies the music as AIFF files. At 24/88.2, I can almost always get one record side onto one CD-R. At 24/96, I was finding that I often needed to split one record side among two CD-R's. The difference in sound quality is negligible (to me) -- and it's just more convenient.Once a record is burned onto two CD-R's as AIFF files, I transfer them to my computer. I use Wavelab to clean the file of ticks/pops, and I use Discwelder Steel to burn DVD-A's. Discwelder Steel is absurdly easy to use -- it's literally a drag and drop process for copying files, and then one menu click to burn the DVD-A (okay, maybe two menu clicks). I've been very pleased with the results.

My god... I hope not. I love my SD-9200 It has brought me and my family many hours of fun and happieness. That's what it's all about... Right?I have heard other models in stores just becuase it's my interest. I was not in the purchasing mode so I really didn't pay attention as closley as I had when I made my purchase 3 years ago.
It seems to me that it is still one of the finer units out their. Internal guts, build, sound quality, video quality ect.
I was going to get the Dennon but it did not support HDCD as Toshiba did.
I am very, very happy with mine.
but the sound hasn't changed. What once sounded superb a few years ago STILL sounds superb. How about a jitter response of less than 200 picoseconds? That hasn't changed either. What about it's devilishly good looks - still there.Having said that, with an HDTV you (and I) will want much better progressive video. That will be a bitter-sweet moment ....
Cheers,
Paul.
...suggest you read it and don't skoff. It blew away my Toshiba 4700 as far as audio was concerned, and also a JVC 600. It is more transparant thatn the c222ES is, on both CD and high-rez. It has upsampling...three combinations. See if you can borrow one to listen to at home. If you can't, considered risking the $130 bucks it costs. if you don't like it you can put it up on eBay and lose maybe $30 bucks.

I could not find a reference to a S55 here in France, but the S35 is everywhere, at a higher price usually. Some places have the S75 but there is no description of the product.
Is the S35 a decent product?
...DVD-Audio (s35 without, s55 with) and changer (s35 singele, s75 multi without DVD-A; s55single, s85 multi w/DVD-A).Can't be sure about the audio circuitry, but these are such mass produced machines they must have a great deal of parts commonality.
Harry
forgot upsampling. The s55 and s85 have it, along with the DVD-A.
