General Asylum: REVIEW: Monster Cable HTS 1000 Power Conditioner/Surge Protector by Bruce from DC

This is the cheaper version of the HTS-2000, reviewed here and by September TAS. The 1000 has only 8 power outlets and omits the two "high current" outlets featured on the 2000. It is geared toward the a/v market and so includes surge protection for 3 coaxial cable video inputs (DSS, rooftop antenna, CATV) and telephone line (used for pay-per-view features of DSS). The manual is a little confusing about what to plug where. There are two banks of outlets, one labelled "video" and the other "audio." Supposedly, they have different filtering. However, one of the "video" inputs is labelled "CD/DVD", so I used that for the CD player. I used the audio inputs for the integrated amp, subwoofer and miscellaneous old analog tape equipment I have. The conditioner completely eliminated the RFI buzz that the subwoofer amp was generating. (I live in very strong RF fields; 3 TV towers within 3 miles or less) Preliminary audio reviews showed a definitely, but not dramatically, cleaner top end using the CD player as a source. There was no discernable adverse effect on system dynamics or bass -- at least from my preliminary listen at max levels. I figured I could not go wrong in buying this, unless it degraded the sound of my system. As a minimum, the equipment replacement guarantee if the surge protector fails and your gear fries, was worth the money. (My Krell amp is always powered up on standby.)
