For years I've used moving magnet type cartridges (Shure V15 Type IV, V, VMR, Grado Signature Series, etc). I just replaced my old Thorens TD125/SME 3009MkII with a AR ETL-1/Premier MMT, and I wanted to do something different with the cartridge as well, so I went moving coil. When I picked up the turntable, the dealer recommended the MC Silver and made me a deal I couldn't refuse. So, I installed, alligned and broke-in the new cartridge....Quite a difference from mm types... It's like going from cone driven to electrostatic speakers. With mm types I had a warm, smooth presentation with deep, solid bass. Now, I have a very lively, detailed sound with a little bit softish bass. The music is more "alive", but so are the ticks, pops, and other various forms of record noise...Great detail, but not as forgiving as mm cartridges. The music reproduction is very impressive as long as the records are kept ultra clean...tough to do on some of my vintage stuff.
