Review: Ortofon Rohmann

66.91.82.127

Just thought I would share my experience with those who are contemplating an Ortofon Rohmann cartridge.

I just received the Rohmann today and as I speak I am lisining to it on my humble setup which consists of a Systemdek IIX/SME V/Cardas IC box/Straitwire Virtuoso platinum & Maestro II cables. All hooked up to a Krell KRC/Mccormack DNA.5/NHT Superzero & SW2 sub with a mono SA-2 amp all wired with Maestro II cables & a double run of Nordost's Super Flatline MKII's.

I don't even have an hour on it but let me tell you! I am impressed with the first album that I threw at it. It is a simple copy of E.T. the soundtrack which was a little noisier with my Ortofon X5 MC & Audioquest 7000NSX ( both of which sound great ). The surface noise level was so diminished & black that my smile froze, something like the chesire cat :) The images were painted better than the AQ 7000NSX ( faster maybe? ). More pinpointed and the soundstage was just as good ( i hope it grows ) I like the way it handles complex passages especially on piano tracks that can trip up some cartridges...not this baby *grins* It is clear and smooth even through the tough parts. The bottom end heft is much more prominant er....tighter & with more kick than the AQ though not by a huge margin though it seems a little more detailed in the lower octaves but most Ortofons I have owned are all fast and detailed in the lower regions. The midrange is not as forward as the X5MC but not too laid back. It seems very lush *drool* I hope it gets better! The micro dynamics were clearly detailed and the macros....my gosh! Exciting!! The way the dynamics just come at you like an attack dog waiting to charge is awesome! I used to own a Ortofon MC30 and thought that was good but this Rohmann improves on all points. I listen to everything from rock-jazz-classical-pop-etc. I just love to hear vinyl on my system even if it is not "audiophile" type lp's. I own many Mobile fidelity's and Nautilus half masters but hey! doesn't the emotion of an lp count? I mean um....can't we just enjoy the vinyl for what it is giving us through sound and music instead of who pressed it or which label it is?? I dunno....that's just me I guess. I have tried newer lp's like Eric Clapton's Reptile which is a truly great recording in my opinion. My jaw is still on the floor....man this is sweet. Also, Clifford Brown sounds unbelievable and I won't sit here and tell you he's in my room but man...he's close enough. I can't wait till the cartridge matures with break-in time. It will be interesting to hear what the Rohmann has to say after 50 hours! Well, i hope this review can turn some heads to the Rohmann because i think for the price it cannot be beat. I paid only $610 for it brand new in the box from 2juki and his services are wonderful. Highly recommended to all who seek great prices with fast delivery.

I'm off to tweak it out as I have it loaded at 47k. My phono end is Krell's reference KPE and I love it a lot. Any Rohmann owners have suggestions as to which settings worked best for you? Any help would be appreciated.

Aloha-no to all you vinyl lovers!
