Re: KLH 23 , 6, vs AR 3

As an owner of KLH6 myself and familiar with KLH5 and AR3 and AR3a, I'd have to say that in extended low bass response AR3/AR3a are the clear winners hands down. AR3 had an f0 of 16hz and in in box f3 of 42 hz making it one of the best low end reproducers of its day at any price. It was equalizable to below 30 hz. KLH 6 and 23 didn't extend nearly as low with anything like the low harmonic distortion of AR3 in that region and suffered from the difficulty of integrating a two way system to cover the entire audio spectrum despite the unusual and outstanding tweeter. This was especially apparant in the crossover region. KLH 6 was deliberately voiced with a slight low end peak which can give male voices a "tubby" sound. The difference is clearly audible in deep organ pedal music and other bass heavy music. Overall, IMO KLH6 was a better balanced and more musical sounding speaker than AR3 or AR3a. KLH 5 was an effort to fix the midrange problem by adding a pair of their excellent full range drivers to cover the midrange. This took the strain off the low end of the tweeter and eliminated the irregular response and falloff at the upper end of the woofer's range. AR had their own problems especially in the midrange. AR3 crossed over the woofer at much too high a frequency and so AR3a reduced the woofer crossover frequency substantially by using an improved midrange dome. BTW, AR was the inventor of the dome tweeter first introduced in AR3 and ferrofluid cooling first introduced in AR3a. But AR3a still had problems and was later replaced by AR10 pi and LST. It wasn't until AR9 that AR finally threw in the towel on getting a dome midrange to cover the region just above the woofer and added an 8" upper bass/lower midrange driver. AR9 was IMO AR's best effort. I also own a pair of those as well. The two AR 12" side firing woofers in an approximately 4 cu ft enclosure perform exceptionally well. They have an in system f3 of 28 hz and can be equalized down to the lowest limits of audibility and below.
