Before replacing the cord, if it is physically intact, try a couple of things first:1. Clean the string, all the pulleys and the dial shaft surface with isopropyl alcohol or other suitable cleaner. Dirt, grease or lube on a nylon/fiberglass core cord is rarely reason for replacement.
2. Apply a little rosin or other slightly adhesive compound to the dial shaft surface. Often after extended use, the shaft gets polished to the point that friction drops to the point of slippage.
Replacement dial cord is not necessarily as easy to find as one might think. The thinner gauges used on many of the post 1960 models is not available in a lot of places. And using substitutes, such as fly fishing line or dental floss, has its drawbacks. So if the original cord is still sound, do all you can to keep from replacing it.
Unless you have the restringing guide on hand, be extra sure to either sketch out the pattern, or take pictures of the arrangement BEFORE you remove the cord. So often, a slight detail is forgotten, and the job becomes a major project.
If even with a new cord you still experience excessive slippage, then you could either (a) increase the idler spring tension with a shorter or tighter spring, or (b) absolute last resort - very, very lightly rub the dial shaft once or twice (and that's it) with a 240+ grade sandpaper, to increase its friction. Don't add wraps to the shaft to increase friction, as this creates binding and jams at the dial limits as the cord spools over itself.
If you have to take the cord off, that is the perfect time to remove and clean and relube the dial shaft, its bearings, all the pulleys, and the capacitor gang bearings. For the older specimens with a good flywheel arrangement, a cleaning and relube often restores that silky and effortless stop to stop movement from a single spin of the tuning knob.
Good luck!
