Pioneer fans: know how to improve the sound of the VSX-D901S a/v receiver?

Howdy, this is my first post in the vintage asylum... I just bought a Pioneer VSX-D901S a/v receiver (circa 1991) in absolute mint condition (truly looks like brand new). I'm pleased with the burly good look and features of the receiver (and the remote) but am left a little cold by its sound quality... its just not very involving. I only plan to use it for 2-channel in my den/office system to drive a pair of stereo speakers on each side of a 27" Sony TV and via the headphone output while working on the computer (I'm listening to it right now).

I just ordered a pair of silver "bridging bars" to replace the pot-metal bars that connect the amp/preamp section and am thinking about hard-wiring in a better quality power cable (no room to mount an IEC jack on the back so it will have to be hardwired).

Anyone know any other tricks to try to improve the sound of this unit? Any tips would be appreciated.
