Marantz 2265B vs 2270 receiver

A few months ago, I purchased a pair of new JBL N-38II floor-standing 3-way ported speakers with 8" woofers and a frequency response of 40 Hz to 20Kz. After auditioning a number of similar Polks, Paradigms, Cambridge Audio, etc., I decided the JBLs had the warmest sound and would be a good match for my recently restored Marantz 2270.

However, after listening to them for some time, I found the sound, although very pleasant, was not as detailed as I would like it on some recordings. I usually keep the tone controls in the flat position and did not want to be constantly making corrections.

I was also having some problems with the FM tuner of the 2270 picking up a clear signal on a few jazz and classical stations I liked. Since we live in an apartment, and I cannot use an external antenna, I tried various types of indoor antennas with mixed results.

Finally, I decided to check out Ben Blish's Marantz website on classicaudio.com for a receiver with the best possible FM sensitivity and found the 2265B was rated at 1.8uV compared to the 2.3 uV of the 2270. Since the 2265B also has a THD of 0.05% compared to the 0.3% of the 2270, I thought it might also provide more detail with the JBL speakers.

A few weeks ago, I picked up a 2265B in excellent condition at a good price and hooked it up to the JBLs. The results were better than I expected. Not only did it pull in a clear signal with a simple amplified dipole antenna on all the FM stations I desired, but the sound was also more detailed with a tighter bass response.

Rather than replace my 2270, I kept it in my rack connected to a pair of brighter-sounding vintage Marantz SP-103 3-way floor-standing speakers with 10' woofers. This allows me to use the FM tuner of the 2265B with both systems. I can also use my Carver 4000T pre-amp with a Denon CDP. Besides such features as a Digital Time Lens, Sonic Holograph and Auto Correlator, the 4000t also has a "surround sound" output that permits me to use both the 2265B and 2270 for some very interesting "surround sound" effects.

Regards

Barney
