I have a huge pair of RTR Series 3 speakers, they stand maybe 4 feet tall, have grilles that are one piece, but fold over the top, and have a passive and active woofer, mid, and tweeter with adjustable crossovers in the back. I've had them nearly 10 years, scored them for like $150 ages ago (I think that's what I paid), I stored them the last few years, then ran them again and the foam surrounds on the passive woofers started falling apart, and the active woofer isn't far behind (cracks forming). I bought new foam for the passives from Simply Speakers in FL, but haven't gotten around to tackling the job yet, then I noticed the actives are going to, so I figured I would wait til I could get the foam for those and do it all at once. I'm considering just taking them out and sending them to someone to make sure they're done right, or parting with the speakers all together.I own tons of speakers, a set each of Boston A60s, A70s, A150s (with the 60s and 150s also needing woofer foam!), Paradigm Atoms and Titans, late 80s JBL L82 (which still kick @**, but the grills are long shot), some old Minimus 7s, and a few pairs of old Advents.
I guess the long and short of it is I would like more info on these RTRs. I haven't been able to find much on these speakers themselves... I knew a fireman once who had an old pair of smaller two way RTRs he inheirited from his father, but he couldn't tell me much about the company or the speakers either. I have never seen these big ones anywhere else, and have looked on the net at various times and not found much at all regarding these (there was maybe an RTR electrostat speaker or something, if I recall, people were collecting??)...
I really thought these speakers had a wonderful full sound, and they handled a lot of power from an old NAD 100 watt amp very well. Obviously the sound was different from when I use my smaller speakers with subs, but these things had such a full sound with what seemed like great bass for a pair of unassisted speakers, especially considering their age.
Interestingly, someone else was talking about finding speakers at Salvation Army, and I think that's where I got these, along with a bunch of albums that had braile tape on them (from like a label maker), that were also in good shape... I think there were an old pair of Cambridge or Advent or one of his lines there too, but they looked too rough to part with, and the SA generally charges too much for stuff around here.
Anyway, any info would be greatly appreciated... Especially info on someone that does surround work and is pretty reasonable. Everyone I see on the net wants $30-$40 per speaker.
Cheers, Rich
