Re: Technics SA-600

Hey I thought I got a deal on my Technics SA-600 I found at a thrift store a couple of months or so ago. I paid $20 for one that was like new. It just needed dusting. I was told on this very site that it has 70 watts per side and was manufactured 79-81. It has IC"s in the output stage instead of transistors which used to be thought of as the cheap way out but I think not! With the durability I have seen on them. I have kept up with the selling prices on that entire line on Ebay since I got mine including the 700 & 800 models. They appear to have great staying power based on the number of them showing up there. If my memory serves me right I have seen the 600's sell on Ebay for anywhere from $50 -$120 depending on the shape they were in and other factors . I'll say this much... These are stong units with a lot of great features. They are also some of the best looking receivers of their time In my opinion. By 1981 some of the other brands were starting to sell out a bit. But I think this was Technics best line. The 70 watts per side on the 600 is really stong. I actually blew out a woofer in a Pinnacle I had hooked to mine. I had them over powered and pop they were gone. You need to be careful because the receiver has a bass boost and a treble boost in addition to the loudness contour. This can be a little much for some speakers especially if your'e on the edge of power handling capabilities on the speakers already! A question was also asked about the "safety light on the 600-Whats it about? It is a "delay on" feature that prevents any pop on noises and such. This is a nice unit with 2 tape monitors center tune and signal stregnth meters and pretty LED power meters. What more could you want? Almost the perfect receiver! And $10 WOW! The Best Franksta
