They are quite different. The only thing that is really similar between the circuits is the choice of tubes. The X-202-B is a fixed bias amp, the X-101-B is a cathode biased amp. The X-202-B has a more sophisticated pre amp section that borrows heavily from the 400-CX-2 pre-amp. You also get more levels of controls with the X-202-B...it has AC and DC balanced controls and bias controls for each pair of output tubes. The X-101-B has a bias control for the entire quad, and AC balance controls.
The X-101-B gets about 25 WPC the X-202-B gets about 35 WPC. The X-101-B also shares its output transformer with the X-100-B and KX-100 amps, and this is a know problematic transformer. I have personally changed about 5 of them in the last 3 years, and finding them is very tough these days. Keep that in mind when purchasing one. I have been mulling over the idea of having them made...but have not decided if I want to lay out the cash yet.
BUT...the X-101-B does have a nice sound. It is indeed a little softer and more "polite" sounding the X-202-B which is more "ballsy" sounding (but in a good way). If I had to choose between the two I would go with the X-202-B...all around I find it to be the better amp. Although working on the X-101-B is a lot easier!!! The X-202-B is a complicated restoration...and the sight of the four caps that have to be changed in the phono stage will give a novice restorer a stroke.
