I just received a free Technics SU-V98 amplifier from a very generous family friend. I previously have been using a Pioneer SX-450 amplifier (which is older and less powerful than the Technics), but I am wondering which is the better amplifier? The amp is powering a set of Ohm MicroWalsh Tall speakers, for which an amp between 20-150 watts is recommended. The Technics is 120 watts per channel, and the Pioneer is 15 watts per channel. Is this amplifier going to give my speakers that dreaded "eighties sound", or will the extra power be beneficial for my sound? I am really unable to give myself an honest trial becuase I am too biased in the matter and it takes a while to switch the amps, thereby making any 'hearing tests' virtually useless. I will just go by the amp that has the better specifications.
If it matters at all, I listen to primarily vinyl and CDs from time to time. I have a very expensive Grado Platinum cartridge, so the amp which will take better advantage of that setup will also be the better choice for me.
Thanks in advance for any help!
