Audio Research LS1 and LS2

2395,

The LS1 and LS2 seem to be sequential designs with one 6922 tubes each, but the LS2 was quite a bit more expensive- ending up $3000 as a MKII balanced as against the LS1 at $1700:

I'm not sure I ever heard the LS1, but given it was the first "LS" design and was quickly superceeded by the LS2 tells the story I think. A friend traded his SP10 for an LS2/PH1 which I though was a big mistake, but the LS2 is still highly regarded. I like the LS2 only to an extent- I seem to always prefer the Audio Research stuff with the most tubes. Replacing the one 6922 with NOS has only a small effect. The LS2 also has a way to reduce gain and I think that's an important feature now - modern CD players and tuners can be too enthusiastic and need gain reduction. I use an LS3 in my office and the gain is never past 9:00- not in it's optimum range.

So, between the two, I'd firmly choose the LS2 and further, make it a MKII and even better a balanced MKII- more control over the gain plus quiet, quiet, quiet.

Sorry, I don't know of modifications to the LS1. ARC stuff is typically so well refined and the components near top quality already that modifications must be done by a patient genius to make improvements that don't also have a penalty elsewhere!

A good LS2B/II must be around $1100 now. If your budget though would extend to $1500-1600, you might also consider a unit with more tubes and look at the excellent LS15- that with four Amperex Bugleboy 6DJ8s is a great preamp.

Cheers,

Bambi B
