longplate JJ ECC803S review

4.229.238.59

Got a chance to hear a pair of these new JJ longplate 12AX7 types in the phonostage of a friend's Audio Research SP3 (with P.S. factory mods)recently. They are a RADICAL departure from the JJ frame grid E83CC that has been around for a while now. This new JJ ECC803S looks quite a bit like the old Tesla longplate ECC803S. It doesn't sound much like the Tesla, but that is not an entirely bad thing. The treble is not as extended as the Tesla, but is quite detailed and musical. Soundstaging of the JJ could be better; in this area is evokes the slightly flat, neutral, but inoffensive mids and imaging of the Sovtek LPS. The JJ is a definite cut above the Sovtek, though. More musical, warmer, just more "vintage" and harmonically complex sounding. I never liked the frame grid JJ (In fact, I don't care for the Telefunken frame grid ECC803S either; I prefer the humble RCA 1960s 12AX7A!)If you like the Ei/Yugo ECC83 for it's neutrality and "rightness" of sonics as compared to much of the new 12AX7 slag, give the new JJ a try.
