1626 as preamp tube

195.93.21.2

I've been trying out various single triodes in a diff pair line stage with CCS I just put together, and started with the 12J5GT and 1626. Of the two I prefer the 1626. It's dynamic and very clean. I'm getting a slight treble roughness but that's probably because the operating point is way off - 180v HT and 3.3mA through the CCS for the pair of tubes. Plate resistor is 38K. I should be shooting for 300v HT and as much current as possible up to 30mA or so through the CCS. I have a wimpy mains trannie at the moment, so needs some parts replecement.
I'd be interested in the views of anyone who's worked with the 1626. I've never seen it used in a line stage, but judging from what I'm getting it could sound really good. Andy Evans
