The ECC99 has two triode sections per tube and a plate diss. of 5W.
So, instead of two EL84s, use a pair of ECC99.Assuming an 8K Ra-a load (Dynaco ST-35). PPP ECC99. Fixed bias
(assuming you use tail CCS):Va = 250Vdc. 20mA/tube (80mA per channel). Vg equiv = -9V
Power into load 5.7W.
D3 = 0.072% D5 = 0.00502% (!!!) Yowzers.Contrast this to a similar EL84 triode operating point:
Va = 320V. Cathode biased PP. Power = 4.5W
D2 = 0.56% D3 = 0.046%The ECC99 is an order of magnitude better on distortion. If you have
high efficiency speakers, I think this tube should be looked into before thinking about expensive 2A3 PP amps.The caveats are, if you are using an input transformer/phase
splitter, you will need a beefy preamp to drive this. Low Z and
high current.-- Jim
