Do any of you remember Speakerlab out of Seattle, Washington ? I just picked up a set of their S30's, the first production design of Milos Nestorovic. It needs some major help, but is unlike anything that i have ever seen before. If you have never heard of Nestorovic's novel approach to bass design, let me give you a quick summary. This specific speaker uses a 1" dome, a 4" sealed back mid and 8" & 10" woofers in a sealed box. Here's the weird part. The 8" is driven at all times via a low pass crossover while the 10" is crossed over via both a high pass AND a low pass filter. At very low frequencies, the 10" acts like a drone cone with the 8" driving it.
My brother "did the math" and says that this arrangement will go deeper than if both woofers were actively driven down low. I can't run these as of yet, so i don't know firsthand.
The crossover uses 5 coils, 6 caps and 11 resistors. It looks like a horrible mess to me. The woofers and mids suffer from foam rot and need repair. I will be going through these for sure, just out of curiosity sakes to see how well the design works.
Does anyone know if Speakerlab is still around or anybody that might have more info on these "odd birds" ??? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sean
