Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: Mirage OM-9 or OM-7 / vs. Spendor SP1/2 ?

There is a review of the OM-7 by Andrew Marshall available on the Audio Ideas Guide linked below.

I tried these out in the store and had a pair home for a home audition. They are of course, bipolar speakers, which radiate both front and back in phase (stricly, same polarity) and in a good part of their range are close omnipolar. In the store, they threw a wide image. They were quite good on male and female vocals. The balance is a bit heavy in the bass, especially noticeable in the bass, and the upper strings sounded rather laid back, though the extreme highs do not. The basic balance is pretty much what could be inferred from the measurements in AIG. The bass response goes quite deep. Anyway, a nice speaker, quite pleasant.

I liked it enough to try a home audition. Well, it's basic balance was pretty much what it was in the store. Our living room area seems to be rather too small for them, and the places where the speakers could be placed are not very symmetrical acoustically. I wasn't able to get as good an image at home.

However, a couple of friends of mine get along quite well with Mirage bipolars. One of them, like me, was looking to replace Quad ESL-63 speakers and got the OM-5, which have a powered subwoofer module. I gather his house has a much larger listening space than ours. And Andrew Marshall, whom I consider a very good speaker reviewer, liked them, too. Anyway, the OM-7 was not neutral enough for me and it did not seem particulary well suited to our room acoustics. However, it is a worthy speaker and if you prefer it to others, go for it.

We settled on forward radiating speakers which work very well in our living room, the PSB Stratus Minis. I was not really that interested in large speakers, though I did not exclude them, since we have a large subwoofer to take care of the deep bass. I auditioned a number of accurate, wide dispersion speakers and got my spouse to listen to the real contenders, too. The Stratus Minis have a flatter frequency response and quite wide dispersion. They are more natural on piano, equal on male and female voice, and better balanced on full orchestra. I heard several others that would probably do about as well--I certainly enjoyed listening to music on them.
