REVIEW: VMPS Ribbon Monitor Two Speakers

216.225.81.108

My vast resevoir of superlatives has broken open. I am still flabbergasted at the two hour audition of Brian Cheny's Masterpieces: the VMPS Ribbon Monitor 2's. They are a quantum leap beyond the quality of anything in thier price range, and much beyond.
What they are:
3 way design per enclosure: Two spiral ribbon tweeters, dual 7" ribbons [dual ended, not single ended like Infinity Epsilons], 12" carbon-fiber woofer, 12" passive radiator [slot loaded].
FR: 20hz-30khz +/- 3db. Sensitivity: 91db/1w/1m Power handling: 350w rms
All I could think of upon hearing them was: "This is the voice of God!"
and I could tell there was way too much speaker here for $2,400. Imagine if you will a speaker that combines the following: The speed of planars and ribbons, the total dispersion coverage of electrostats, the slam of the best dynamics, the analytical ability of speakers like the B&W 801.
Regular cone and dome don't have this SPEED. Electrostats and planars don't have this SLAM. It's like a total fusion of one phase coherent source that exemplifies the absoloute strengths of all designs.
For the price range I could have some Paradigm studio 100's, Martin-Logan Airius, or some pissant Solilloquy bookshelves. Forget them totally! by compare, they are all PATHETIC. It is as if a force 10 storm comes from these, with all minutia intact. The sheer detail and absoloute transparency was evident on a 1958 MONO recording of "West side story". I could babble for pages and not capture the unbelievable and fast vocals. Paul Simons "Diamonds on the soles of her shoes" was a rapturous free fall into harmonic joy. Microdynamics at any volume sang every note with unblinking clarity and effortless dynamics.
Behold, the god of bass! 20hz fundamentals just displayed thier crushing power when the speakers were called to do so. No boom, fuzz, or woolyness to speak of. There might as well have been a pair of Velodyne ULD-15's there. Waves of percussive energy that radiated smoothly and evenly in a large room reguardless of seating position.
Talk about ruler flat! I though NHT's were low in color. These sparkle with balance at every audible octave! Instruments are solidly positioned in thier large as life glory. You peek into the darkness to see just what strings were being picked. A grand piano sounded truly grand, not just like a few keys in front of you.
The depth extended as far back as a good sized bandstand would. No instruments were lost no matter how complex the material. A stout 200 watt Parasound amp ran out of gas LONG before these speakers could. They could become frighteningly loud, and yet, the minutia of a tounge hitting the roof of a folksingers mouth was very clear.
I was going over a rollodex of fault and weaknesses in my mind. Well what about...nope, ok, what about...nope. Impossible for me to critisize.
I do not know what perfection is. But these speakers just overwhelm so many speakers. The simply kick the hell out so many highly toted brands. ALL this near perfection for $1,000 less than a Bose 901 lifestyle system! I say that because there are the quality opposite of Bose. I feel the 901's are worth $199 a pair, where as these just KILL $14,000 Infinity Epsilons across the board.
All I can say is audition them. Nothing has opened my wallet and my heart in the audio world this fast. This is the grail I have been looking for. A full range speaker that makes many powered subs sound like a joke.
My socks were totally BLASTED off!
Right now, in one corner of heaven, there is a certain supreme being enjoying a pair of these miracles.
