What killed Rory Gallagher

A few quick comments about the book the following excerpts are freom,Gallagher,Marriot,Derringer and Trower/Their Lives and Music.

An interesting read but somehow unfullfilling.I wanted more of the sordid details. If people were shooting heroin, how much and with who??I want ALL the nasty details.Having said that this was still worth reading to see a little of the inside Rory Gallagher.
According to the book Rory was anti drug.allmost shitting his pants when he answered the door of his motel room and a total stranger shoved a mirror and four HUGE lines of coke at him and proudly saying,"look what I got for you".The man had to be ushered out quickly. Not even any pot smoking. But the alcohol was consumed in large quantitys. How much??Don't know because the book doesn't share that detail. He was all consumed to his music.Playing all day and thinking only of his music.Rarely giving interviews he was introverted off stage and a showman extreme on stage.I would say a comment in the book sums up Rory.He spent two hours a day, while playing a concert, being Rory Gallagher and 22 hours a day wanting to be Rory Gallgher.
What killed him??The book did shed light on this and yes excessive alchol consumption was partly at fault for his liver failure and transplant.Allow me to quote from the book for more detail.
Donal Gallagher:Like all of us he drank from the 60s and the 70s and not as heavily perhaps. But there was allways too much alcohol all over his songs;there was allways a reference. It was no mystery. The cause for concern there would have been more to his health regarding medication.Particularly how it was effecting his looks. The steroids that were in the medication made him look more affected. It kind of looked like the effect of alcohol. The danger and my concern was the liver damage had more cause from medication.Which is a synthetic formula.I know that one time i got him some medical attention, and the concern was more the medication causing the liver damge as opposed to the alcohol.

This is what makes me mad about the book. Why was he taking the meds? What problem? It's never told. But seeing some type of steroid use,and probably overuse, that would explain his weight gain and puffy looks of the last 5 years of his life.

Mark Feltham:And there he was in the end on all these different sorts of prescription drugs that different doctors were prescribing him.Which I'm sure he thought that they maybe were the answer and that he would get a little relief. But to be honest they were confusing him even more.

Author:During the last few years on the road,Rory was carrying a shoebox full of pills not only for what ailed him but to combat potential illnesses.
Donal Gallgher:Rory was complaining of liver pains and the doctor was just prescribing him coprimoxyl(sic),which is the next step down from morphine. It was pure parasitimol. But what a lot of people don't appreciate is the biggest cause of liver failure, certainly in Britain anyway,is over dosing on parasitimol.
THE END
Donal G:He had recovered quite well from the transplant. The bizarre thing is that most people think it was rejection. It wasn't.In fact, the statement was that the best part of his body was the new organ he had. That aside,I was making arrangements for nim to be transferred back to Cromwell hospital to recover. This is after about two months post operation,So he had done quite well. And the day I had gone in with the arrnagements made they said,"no,we need to keep him another day."He'd picked up a bug at the hospitalThey had him pumped full of antibiotics but they weren't strong enough because he had been prescribed so many abtibiotics over the years. So in effect the bug was out to mutate whatever the new antibiotic was.Watching that was quite bizzare where they were changing culture every hour. And they would go to the lab to find another antibiotic and it just didn't work.
Rory died on June 14,1995.
