Greg,If you are thinking older CDP ( pre CD3 ), check with NANA to see if they still have the transports for those older units.
I haven't heard the CD2, but, between 3, 3.5 and 5, I liked the 3.5 the best strictly for its tune carrying ability. ( don't go looking for subtlety and stage from this guy ). A CD3 sounded pretty rough even compared to a CD3.5.
A CD5 is all together something different from their old 'cartoon' range. The stage opens up and is warmer and has more sophisticated tonal shading than any other CD players prior to the 5 series. A bare CD5 ( meaning no optional power supply attached ) the bass can sound slightly untidy compared to a CD3.5 but you gain more credible midrange and better resolution up top.
Naim die-hards would argue that the new 5 range 'sold out' for the main stream crowd. I can see their point on some stuff, but I think the newer Naim, in general, close the gap between tubes and solid state 'sound' much better than many.
Under 2k Naim players, I liked a CD3.5 and a CDX the best, ( even more than their current production entry level CD players ) but, i am probably in the minority.
A CD 5 is much easier to partner with non Naim gear, too.
