Take EV tariffs for example

The 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs was applied by Canada entirely to placate US auto makers. That was inevitable given the tight integration of Canadian and US vehicle production. This shielding of US makers from Chinese competition will ensure that American EVs remain expensive. (Musk, the DOGE guy, doesn't mind at all since Tesla has a big lead in EV manufacture in the USA, and the tariff will ensure him a near-monopoly in that "niche".)

BUT -- hypothetically of course -- if US tariffs screw the auto industry in Canada (which they would), Canada should immediately drop or reduce is 100% Chinese EV tariff. Further it ought to invite and maybe incentivize Chinese makers to build assembly plants in Canada.

Ontario has huge EV batter plants nearing completion; they could easily be tooled to provide batteries for Chinese-designed EVs.

NOT the 51st state, eh!?!
