For farmers and contractors. Problem is when they're used as personal luxury vehicles, like Monte Carlos and T-Birds used to be. Did you know that the gas guzzler tax doesn't apply to pickups? If it did, only the Ford Maverick would be exempt.
SUVs are a marketing gimmick, pure and simple, a way to charge the rubes more for less. You could look it up.
If you've got six kids, an SUV makes sense. If you live at the end of a dirt road in an area that gets snowed in for three months of the year, an SUV makes sense.
If you live in Pittsburgh, you have one or two kids, an SUV is ridiculous, and yes, people are stupid for buying them.
My brother just got a 2021 Honda Pilot, and I asked him why he needed such a huge vehicle. His kids are grown, he's got two granddaughters, they're little, they can fit in the back of anything.
His reasoning was, well, we go to the beach every summer for a week and we can jam a lot of stuff in the Pilot.
sr, I've been to the beach with them. They take twice as much stuff as they need and it sits unused at the beach house.
It's like that old George Carlin joke about filling up your house with junk. The bigger the house, the more junk you get.
He spent tens of thousands of dollars more than he needed to--he used to take his family to the beach for a week in a Mercury Cougar--just for that one week every year when he takes twice as much stuff to the Outer Banks than he'll ever need or use.
You ask me, that's stupid.
BTW, he's actually got two Pilots. The other one is first generation, and I've expressed my opinion about the stupidity of SUVs in his presence before. His reply is always, "But that old Pilot has 320,000 miles on it!"
Sure it does. Because it's a Honda from an era when Hondas were still great cars.. Not because it's an SUV.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
