One technique used for PEAK DEMAND is the 'big lake'.
During the night you pump a LOT of WATER up a BIG HILL.
Next day, during peak demand, you releast the water thru generators to harvest power for peak demands.
You do NOT drain the water but rather recycle.....so you may only fully charge the system once than add water to make up for evaporation.
Of course, as more and more electric vehicles are charged at night, the demand will rise and there will be less surplus power to run the pumps.
Also? NOT to Forget.....most power plant maintenance of the PLANNED type is done at night when in the old days equipment usage was minimal. Now? That valley is being 'backfilled' with electic car and battery recharge demand.
