I fear very soon cassettes will be a thing of the past. I would certainly not invest in a new deck.

I owned an Akai KX625 3-head deck with the X-tal head. $5 bucks at a garage sale, but I could never get it to play right.

The downfall of many vintage decks are the mechanically complex drive systems chock-full of rubber parts that wear, become brittle/glazed, or rot. Locating replacement belts can also be a headache.

I have heard a lot of good things about the Nakamichi decks. I also owned a Tandberg 420 which had three heads and three motors. Very nice build quality and good sound. Sold it about three years ago before deck prices dropped to nothing.
