Thanks for the suggestion. I just looked inside to check it out. The terminals are behind the tweeters and are part of a board that contains the electronics for the bass and treble adjustment that these speakers have. The contacts for the terminals are inside the board, so I would not want to risk messing up the board, which would be very difficult to replace. The simplest solution seems to be find a new knob or try to add something on to the short bolt that sticks out for the knob to screw onto.
