reflections cause multipath, which by definition is the same signal delayed in time from the direct transmission path after bouncing off another refective plane. The effects of multipath include constructive and destructive interference, and phase shifting of the signal. The better FM antenna has a very narrow front window for accepting signals, and rejects those to the side and rear. Note the interference above can cause amplitude modulation, and phase shifts cause distortion in the detector. Yes, a directional antenna is better, even if you don't need the signal gain.
