Thanks for the link. I understand better now, though still imperfectly. The main missing piece was that the am subcarrier gets frequency modulated onto the main carrier. It's still unclear how phase of the suppressed subcarrier is preserved, but at least I got a major hurdle of nonunderstanding out of the way, thanks to your help.
